LOS ANGELES, CA – A Los Angeles man has been sentenced to jail for his role in an organized auto theft ring that targeted vehicles across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, prosecutors said.
Joel Quinonez, 23, of Compton, was part of a group that stole newer-model vehicles in multiple thefts carried out between October and November 2024, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors said the thieves used specialized tools to gain electronic access to the cars, allowing them to unlock and operate the vehicles without traditional keys.
“In all instances, the thieves were able to steal the vehicles by using tools to gain electronic access to unlock and operate the vehicles,” court documents stated.
Following an investigation, law enforcement conducted searches at the homes of Quinonez and an unidentified juvenile accomplice. Both were arrested in connection with the crimes.
At the time of the thefts, Quinonez was on probation in Los Angeles County for felony grand theft auto. His prior conviction and continued involvement in vehicle-related crimes factored into the case against him, prosecutors said.
“This sentencing sends a clear message: Organized crime targeting our community will not go unanswered,” said Ventura County Deputy District Attorney Katherine Plante, who prosecuted the case. “Auto theft rings prey on hardworking families, disrupt local businesses, and fuel broader criminal activity. This outcome reflects the tireless work of law enforcement and our commitment to holding perpetrators accountable.”
On January 13, Quinonez pleaded guilty to one felony count of auto theft. He was sentenced on February 11 to serve 16 months in Ventura County Jail.
Authorities did not disclose additional details regarding the status of his accomplices or whether further arrests were expected in connection with the case.
