LOS ANGELES, CA – A fatal crash involving a pedestrian temporarily shut down the westbound 210 Freeway in Azusa early Wednesday, bringing traffic to a standstill during the morning commute before all lanes were eventually reopened.

The incident was reported shortly after 3:30 a.m. near Citrus Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities issued a SigAlert roughly 15 minutes later and closed all westbound lanes while officers investigated the fatal collision.

The shutdown quickly produced a significant traffic backup along the freeway as commuters approached the area before sunrise.

By around 5:45 a.m., vehicles remained heavily backed up on the westbound 210, with congestion extending well beyond the immediate crash scene.

The carpool lane was the first portion of the freeway to reopen, with authorities allowing traffic through that lane at approximately 4:41 a.m.

The remaining lanes stayed closed while investigators continued working at the scene.

Information reviewed by Street People indicates authorities had not immediately determined what led to the pedestrian being on the freeway or how the collision occurred.

Officials also did not release the identity of the person who was killed.

No information was immediately available regarding the driver involved in the collision, including whether that person remained at the scene or suffered any injuries.

The early-morning closure came during a particularly sensitive period for traffic because the westbound 210 serves as a major commuter route connecting communities east of Los Angeles with the San Gabriel Valley and other parts of the region.

With every westbound lane initially blocked, motorists approaching Azusa were forced either to wait in the developing congestion or seek alternate routes.

Drivers were advised to consider using southbound State Route 57 to reach the 10 Freeway before reconnecting with the 210 farther west near Irwindale.

The California Highway Patrol is responsible for traffic enforcement and crash investigations on California freeways and state highways. The agency also manages roadway incidents that require temporary lane closures and traffic-control measures. More information about CHP operations and traffic safety resources is available through the agency’s official website.

The use of a SigAlert indicated the collision was expected to cause a substantial disruption to freeway traffic.

As investigators worked, the closure remained concentrated near Citrus Avenue, while congestion continued building behind the scene.

Authorities gradually began restoring traffic once the initial investigation and roadway work allowed lanes to reopen safely.

At 6:21 a.m., CHP announced that the freeway had been cleared and all westbound lanes were open again.

That meant the full closure lasted for roughly two and a half hours from the initial report, although residual congestion likely continued as the accumulated traffic moved through the area.

Authorities have not released further details about the pedestrian’s movements before the crash, whether the person had entered the freeway on foot from a nearby ramp or roadway, or whether another circumstance placed the victim in traffic lanes.

The exact sequence of events leading to the fatal collision therefore remains unclear.

Officials also have not announced whether impairment, visibility, speed or any other factor is being examined as part of the investigation.

The victim’s identity is expected to remain withheld until authorities complete the appropriate notification process.

No arrests or citations were announced in the information available about the incident.

The investigation into the fatal pedestrian crash remains ongoing.
