LOS ANGELES, CA – An 18-year-old Garden Grove man has been arrested in connection with the death of his 17-year-old live-in girlfriend after police said she suffered severe head injuries during an altercation at a residence.
The Garden Grove Police Department identified the suspect as Ethan Vidal, 18, of Garden Grove.
The victim was identified as Janely Gutierrez, 17.
Police were dispatched shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9, to the 8800 block of Hewitt Place after receiving a request for medical assistance involving a young woman who was bleeding from the head.
When officers arrived, they found Gutierrez suffering from severe injuries and bleeding heavily.
She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital in grave condition.
Investigators determined that Gutierrez and Vidal, who police said were living together and were in a dating relationship, had been involved in an altercation before officers were called.
Vidal remained at the scene and voluntarily spoke with officers, according to authorities.
As investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding Gutierrez’s injuries, Vidal was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted homicide.
Gutierrez remained hospitalized following the incident.
She died from her injuries the following day.
Her death changed the case from an attempted homicide investigation into a homicide investigation.
Information reviewed by Street People indicates authorities have not publicly disclosed exactly how Gutierrez suffered the fatal head injuries.
Police also have not released details about what caused the dispute between the couple or what happened during the altercation immediately before the medical aid call.
Those circumstances remain central to the continuing investigation.
The Garden Grove Police Department has not released additional details about whether investigators recovered a weapon, whether anyone else was present inside the residence or whether neighbors witnessed any portion of the confrontation.
Authorities also have not said whether Vidal himself called for help or who initially contacted emergency personnel.
The information released so far establishes that officers responded to a medical aid request, found Gutierrez gravely injured and subsequently determined that an altercation had occurred between her and Vidal.
The decision to initially arrest Vidal on suspicion of attempted homicide came before Gutierrez died.
After her death, detectives continued the investigation as a homicide case.
The Garden Grove Police Department’s Investigations Unit is responsible for solving crimes and apprehending suspects in coordination with patrol officers and other specialized personnel.
In this case, investigators will be tasked with reconstructing what occurred inside the residence before officers arrived and determining the precise sequence that resulted in Gutierrez’s fatal injuries.
Authorities have not announced whether additional forensic testing, surveillance footage, phone records or witness interviews are being used as part of that process.
Police likewise have not disclosed whether Gutierrez and Vidal had been the subjects of any previous law-enforcement calls or domestic disturbances.
No information about any prior history between the two should be assumed unless investigators release it.
The victim’s age adds another particularly serious dimension to the case.
Gutierrez was 17 years old, while Vidal had recently reached adulthood at 18.
Authorities have described them as a live-in couple but have not provided additional information about how long they had been dating or living together.
The case remains an allegation against Vidal unless and until criminal charges are proven in court.
Police have not announced what formal charges prosecutors may ultimately file following Gutierrez’s death.
The investigation may be submitted to prosecutors after detectives complete their initial work and assemble the evidence surrounding the incident.
At this stage, authorities have not provided a detailed account of the alleged assault itself.
They have not said whether Gutierrez was struck with an object, suffered injuries during a fall or was injured through another mechanism.
Police have only confirmed that she was found bleeding severely from the head after an altercation involving Vidal.
That distinction is important because the exact cause and manner of the fatal injuries remain part of the evidence investigators must establish.
The department has also not released information about an autopsy or whether additional medical findings have clarified how Gutierrez died.
For residents seeking to provide information in criminal cases, the Garden Grove Police Department directs follow-up questions and investigative information to its Investigations Unit at 714-741-5800.
The department also advises residents to call 911 when there is an immediate physical danger or an incident actively in progress.
No other suspects have been identified in connection with Gutierrez’s death based on the information currently available.
Police have not indicated that there is an ongoing threat to the surrounding neighborhood.
For detectives, the remaining work centers on determining exactly what happened during the couple’s dispute, what caused Gutierrez’s fatal injuries and what evidence will be presented as the case moves forward.
The investigation remains ongoing.
