LOS ANGELES, CA – California Highway Patrol officers seized approximately 30 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of more than $800,000 after stopping an SUV on Interstate 5 in Merced County, authorities said.
The seizure occurred Aug. 12 after officers pulled over a 2025 Honda CR-V for an alleged traffic violation.
During the stop, an officer noticed what CHP described as several indicators of possible criminal activity.
Authorities did not disclose what those indicators were or provide additional details about the initial traffic violation.
Officers subsequently searched the SUV.
During that search, investigators allegedly discovered a bag containing approximately 30 pounds of cocaine, according to CHP.
Authorities estimated the seized narcotics had a street value of about $817,200.
The driver was taken into custody following the discovery.
Authorities have not released the driver’s identity in the information available for this report.
The person was booked into the Merced County Main Jail on suspicion of possession of cocaine for sale and transportation of cocaine across non-contiguous counties.
Information reviewed by Street People indicates the investigation was then transferred to the Merced Area Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team for additional follow-up.
The California Highway Patrol has jurisdiction over traffic enforcement on state highways and freeways while also participating in investigations involving criminal activity discovered during highway enforcement operations.
CHP’s Central Division includes Interstate 5 among the major transportation corridors patrolled by its officers throughout California’s Central Valley. The agency describes I-5 as one of the region’s critical routes for both commercial traffic and everyday motorists.
The seizure therefore occurred along a corridor that carries significant north-south traffic through the state.
Authorities have not said where the Honda CR-V began its trip, where it was headed or whether investigators believe the drugs originated in California.
They also have not disclosed whether anyone besides the driver was inside the SUV.
No information was released regarding whether additional narcotics, cash, weapons or other suspected evidence were recovered from the vehicle.
The 30-pound cocaine seizure nevertheless represents a substantial quantity of narcotics from a single traffic stop.
California law separately addresses possession of controlled substances for the purpose of sale. Under Health and Safety Code Section 11351, possession or purchase of certain controlled substances for sale can result in felony prosecution.
The specific charges ultimately filed in this case will depend on the evidence reviewed by investigators and prosecutors.
An arrest and booking do not constitute a conviction, and the allegations against the driver would have to be established through the criminal court process.
The CHP Merced Area office serves portions of Merced County as part of the agency’s Central Division. CHP says the office handles traffic-safety responsibilities across eastern Merced County and works within a region crossed by several major transportation routes.
While the Merced Area office patrols other major highways in the county, the broader CHP Central Division also oversees enforcement operations along Interstate 5.
Authorities have not explained what prompted officers to expand the traffic stop into a vehicle search beyond saying that indicators of possible criminal activity were observed.
They also have not said whether the driver consented to the search or whether another legal basis was used.
Those details may become part of the investigative or court record if charges are formally filed.
The estimated $817,200 value attributed to the cocaine was described by authorities as a street-value estimate. Such estimates can vary depending on location, purity, packaging and how drugs are ultimately distributed.
For the current investigation, however, CHP placed the value of the seized cocaine at more than $800,000.
The case has now moved beyond the initial freeway stop into a narcotics investigation.
The Merced Area Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team is handling the continuing investigation, according to authorities.
Officials have not announced whether investigators are seeking additional suspects or whether the seizure is believed to be connected to a larger trafficking operation.
No additional arrests have been announced.
The investigation remains ongoing.
