LOS ANGELES, CA – Authorities are searching for the driver of a Rolls-Royce involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash on Sherman Way near Van Nuys Boulevard that claimed the life of a young man and left his friend hospitalized.
The crash occurred on November 8, around 9:50 p.m., when a speeding Mercedes GT63 and Rolls-Royce Cullinan collided with a Honda Civic making a left turn into a parking lot at Sherman Circle. The Honda was struck by the Mercedes, while the Rolls-Royce veered into a Chevy Traverse before crashing into the curb.
The driver of the Rolls-Royce fled the scene on foot and remains at large. Police believe the vehicles may have been racing at the time of the collision.
The driver of the Mercedes, who was injured and taken to the hospital, was later arrested for reckless driving.
The two occupants of the Honda, 22-year-old Rangel Vega and his best friend, 22-year-old Alejandro Luquin, were on their way to get food after attending youth services at their church, La Iglesia del Camino. Both were rushed to the hospital following the crash.
Vega succumbed to his injuries, while Luquin has undergone three surgeries and is still recovering. His family has chosen not to inform him of Vega’s death, fearing the emotional impact could hinder his recovery.
The tragedy has devastated the community. Vega and Luquin, active members of their church, were known for their close friendship and involvement in youth programs.
To support the families, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with medical and funeral expenses. Additionally, family and friends will host a food sale fundraiser at Balboa Park on Saturday, November 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A memorial service for Vega is scheduled for Wednesday, November 20.
The Los Angeles Police Department is urging anyone with information about the driver of the Rolls-Royce or the events leading up to the crash to contact them.
This incident underscores the dangers of reckless driving and street racing, which continue to pose significant risks to innocent lives in the city. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to bring the driver to justice and provide answers for the grieving families.
