LOS ANGELES, CA – A two-car crash involving a Waymo vehicle in Los Angeles’ Pico-Union neighborhood sent two people to the hospital early Sunday morning, authorities said.
The collision was reported around 5:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of Venice Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
LAFD confirmed that two people were transported to a hospital. Their conditions were not immediately released.
A Waymo spokesperson said the company’s vehicle was traveling eastbound on Venice Boulevard between South Union Avenue and Toberman Street at approximately 27 mph when it was struck by a blue sedan.
According to Waymo, the blue sedan was traveling in the opposite direction at an estimated 47 to 50 mph before the crash.
The spokesperson said the blue sedan first made contact with a pedestrian pushing a cart outside of a crosswalk at approximately 42 mph, then swerved into the opposite lane and struck the Waymo vehicle.
Information reviewed by Street People indicates Waymo is coordinating with first responders as the investigation continues.
Footage from the scene posted to the Citizen app showed debris scattered across the roadway after the collision. A wheelchair was also visible in the middle of the street.
Video from the scene also appeared to show that a baby had been inside one of the vehicles at the time of the crash. The child did not appear to be injured in the footage and was later seen lying in a stroller, according to the report.
Authorities have not confirmed which two people were hospitalized, whether the pedestrian was among those transported, or whether any citations or arrests were made.
The investigation remains ongoing.
