LOS ANGELES, CA – Three Los Angeles Metro D Line subway stations on Wilshire Boulevard, which opened about five months ago, closed early Friday for 10 days so crews can install permanent electrical equipment, according to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega stations closed at 2 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and are scheduled to reopen at 4 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2. During the closure, D Line trains run only between Union Station and Wilshire/Western.
Metro said power to the entire Wilshire/La Brea Station has to be temporarily shut off so the work can be done safely. The agency announced the closure on Oct. 9.
Electrical work at Wilshire/La Brea
Metro said crews are installing permanent electrical equipment at the Wilshire/La Brea Station. The equipment supports the station’s long-term operations and maintenance.
The three stations opened May 8 with temporary electrical equipment in place. Metro’s D Line Extension project page lists Section 1 of the extension as open as of May 8, with new stations at La Brea, Fairfax and La Cienega.
Why the work was not finished before opening
Metro said the need for the electrical work was identified before the stations opened. The replacement equipment took longer to arrive than the agency expected.
Rather than delay the opening, Metro opened the stations with the temporary equipment. The agency said that allowed passengers to use the extension about five months earlier than if service had waited until the electrical work was complete.
D Line service during the closure
Trains are running between Union Station and Wilshire/Western for the length of the closure. Riders traveling west of Wilshire/Western are not served by rail during that time.
Metro said it will use the closure for more than the electrical installation. Crews will also connect systems and complete other work needed for the next extension of the D Line toward Beverly Hills and Century City.
Shuttle and bus options
Metro said special shuttles on Line 855 are running every 10 minutes between Wilshire/Western and the Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega stations. The shuttles replace train service on that stretch and are free.
Bus Lines 20 and 720 continue their normal service along Wilshire Boulevard. Metro said that service includes access to area museums along the corridor.
Station plaza activities
Metro said regularly scheduled activities at the Wilshire/Fairfax Station plaza will continue during the closure. They include the Tuesday farmers market, Bake to the Future on Oct. 25 and LATINAfest at Metro: Día de los Muertos on Oct. 31.
Activities at the Wilshire/La Brea station plaza are temporarily suspended. Metro said they will resume after the station reopens.
Ridership on the new stations
The new stations drew substantial ridership after opening. In a news release issued June 15, Metro reported that D Line ridership rose 62% in May 2026 compared with May 2025, with weekend growth of nearly 80%.
The release said the new D Line stations added 8,000 to 10,000 riders per day after opening May 8. Metro has not published figures on how the closure affects ridership.
Where riders can get updates
Metro said riders can get service updates through the LA Metro app, on its website and on its service alerts page. Questions about the project can be directed to the project hotline at (213) 922-6934 or by email at [email protected].
Stations scheduled to reopen Nov. 2
The Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega stations are scheduled to reopen at 4 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2. Shuttle Line 855 and the reduced D Line service remain in place until then.
