LOS ANGELES, CA – Another Los Angeles neighborhood was affected by a water main break Sunday morning, this time in the Jefferson Park area, as crews continued responding to a series of recent ruptures across the region.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said the break occurred in the 2800 block of South Bronson Avenue. Officials believe the water line ruptured around 2 a.m.
As of 6 a.m. Sunday, 37 services and three fire hydrants were affected by the break, LADWP officials told KTLA.
Crews were at the scene Sunday morning working to assess the damage and begin repairs. Officials had not provided a timeline for when service would be restored to the affected homes, businesses or hydrants.
Information reviewed by Street People indicates the Jefferson Park rupture follows several recent water main breaks across the Los Angeles area, including a major break on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood that sent millions of gallons of water into surrounding streets and created a large sinkhole.
Sunset Boulevard reopened Saturday after nine days of near-continuous repair work. Officials said that rupture released roughly 17 million gallons of water before crews completed repairs and reopened the roadway.
Additional water main breaks were also reported in Hollywood late last week, adding to concerns about aging infrastructure and the strain on the city’s water system.
An LADWP spokesperson previously told KTLA that Los Angeles typically experiences two to four water main breaks per day. The utility also said the city’s 36% leak rate is lower than the national average.
“When we have a large break, it draws attention to our smaller breaks,” the LADWP statement said in part.
Officials have not said what caused the Jefferson Park break, how extensive the damage may be, or whether any nearby properties were flooded.
The repair work remains ongoing.
