SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A San Francisco activist and outspoken supporter of the “Defund the Police” movement has gone viral on social media after a public plea for help recovering her stolen U-Haul truck prompted widespread backlash. The truck, containing nearly all of her possessions, was stolen in the city, triggering a contentious debate online.
Darcie Bell, who uses the pseudonym “Jerque Cousteau” on the social media platform X, took to the site to request assistance from the public after the theft. “If you see a 26-foot U-Haul truck with the Arizona plate AL50003- would you let me know because it had like everything I own on it,” she wrote.
Her post quickly gained traction, but not in the way she anticipated. Critics pointed to her history of posts criticizing law enforcement and supporting efforts to defund police departments, accusing her of hypocrisy for seeking aid after the theft.
Critics Take Aim
The backlash included screenshots of her past anti-police posts juxtaposed with her current plea for help. One post, shared by the account Bay State of Mind, commented, “Anti Police activist begs the police to help.” Another user, addiction recovery advocate Tom Wolf, shared a post titled “Shot. Chaser,” highlighting the contrast between Bell’s previous criticisms of law enforcement and her recent comments.
Bell filed a police report shortly after discovering the theft but later expressed frustration with the lack of immediate results. “I haven’t found my s—! The cops didn’t do s—! U-Haul made me file a f—ing police report!” she told reporters, emphasizing her frustration with the process.
Defending Her Stance
Despite the criticism, Bell has doubled down on her stance against police, asserting that she did not directly seek their help and was required to file a report by U-Haul. “I literally never called the cops,” she stated, adding that her frustrations stemmed from the lack of swift action in recovering her belongings.
“There’s cameras all over this city. They haven’t done s—! … I just want my stuff back!” she said, emphasizing the sense of helplessness she felt after losing nearly everything.
U-Haul responded publicly, urging Bell to ensure that law enforcement was involved. “Please be sure to contact us back to provide the police report to the Equipment Recovery department,” the company’s customer support account advised.
Personal Impact and Public Scrutiny
Bell, who describes herself as a single mother, said the theft was especially devastating as it impacted her children’s belongings during the holiday season. Addressing her critics, she pushed back against what she perceived as a lack of compassion.
“Look at these good, Christian ‘victim advocates’ celebrating my kids losing their belongings at Christmas,” she wrote in a pointed comment aimed at her detractors.
A Polarizing Debate
The incident has reignited debates over policing and crime in San Francisco, a city often in the spotlight for its handling of criminal justice and public safety. Critics of the “Defund the Police” movement seized on Bell’s situation to argue for the necessity of law enforcement, while supporters of reform pointed to her experience as an example of systemic failures.
As the search for her belongings continues, Bell’s plea has sparked a broader discussion about crime, policing, and community response in San Francisco, underscoring the complexities of navigating personal loss and public scrutiny in the age of social media.
