LOS ANGELES, CA – A 17-year-old suspect is in custody following the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in Boyle Heights, authorities said Tuesday.
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Sixth Street and Grande Vista Avenue late Monday night.
Upon arrival, officers spotted a suspect fleeing the scene, prompting a search of the area. During their investigation, authorities discovered the victim inside a car suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released due to being a minor, was later apprehended and taken into custody. Investigators have not disclosed whether the victim and suspect knew each other or what may have led to the shooting.
Authorities are withholding the name of the victim pending notification of next of kin.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether it was gang-related or stemmed from a personal dispute.
Residents in the area reported hearing several gunshots before police arrived, and officers canvassed the neighborhood for additional evidence, including surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences.
The shooting comes amid growing concerns about violent crime in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, where community leaders have called for expanded efforts to address gang activity and youth violence.
