LOS ANGELES, CA – A car chase suspect is in custody after colliding with multiple vehicles and refusing to exit the car for more than an hour during a tense standoff in North Hollywood, authorities said.
The pursuit, which began around 3 p.m. in the Sunland area, involved deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Officials said the suspect, initially wanted for a possible DUI, led authorities on a high-speed chase in a black four-door sedan, striking several vehicles along the way.
During the pursuit, the suspect drove erratically, at one point swerving onto the wrong side of the road. Near Vineland Avenue and Camarillo Street, the driver narrowly avoided a collision with four cars, skimming past one vehicle before speeding through the busy intersection.
The chase escalated when the driver crashed into two patrol cars while attempting to evade authorities. Despite the collisions, the suspect continued driving before eventually coming to a stop at Vineland Avenue and Hortense Street in the Sunland/North Hollywood area.
Witnesses reported seeing the airbags deployed in the suspect’s vehicle after the final crash. However, the driver refused to exit the car, prompting a standoff that lasted more than an hour. Law enforcement officers surrounded the vehicle, negotiating with the suspect before physically removing and detaining the individual shortly after 4:45 p.m.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or confirmed additional charges beyond the suspected DUI. No serious injuries were reported among bystanders or officers involved in the pursuit.
The incident, which unfolded during peak traffic hours, caused significant disruptions in the area as authorities cordoned off streets to manage the situation. Investigators are expected to review traffic camera footage and gather witness statements as part of the ongoing investigation.
