LOS ANGELES, CA – A suspect was taken into custody Friday afternoon after allegedly firing gunshots from a residence in Malibu, prompting a significant law enforcement response and neighborhood evacuations.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) received multiple 911 calls at approximately 2:40 p.m., reporting gunfire emanating from a home on Carbon Mesa Road. Concerned residents described a chaotic scene as deputies arrived in force to address the unfolding situation.
Authorities quickly moved to secure the area, warning nearby residents to evacuate.
“One of my friends who lives up the street said that deputies came knocking door-to-door, telling people that if they could be seen from this house, they had to leave,” said Darcy Oherlihy, a local resident. She added that the suspect was rumored to have military training, though LASD officials later stated they could not confirm this claim.
Images from the scene showed at least six LASD vehicles stationed outside the residence as deputies worked to contain the suspect.
According to law enforcement, the situation escalated when the suspect allegedly fired at deputies upon their arrival.
“Deputies faced gunfire as they approached the home,” said Lt. Ronald Klumpp of LASD. “This required extreme caution and a methodical approach to ensure the safety of both the officers and nearby residents.”
Authorities surrounded the home, using multiple angles to contain the suspect. By 4 p.m., deputies confirmed the suspect had been apprehended. No injuries were reported among residents, deputies, or the suspect.
Officials continued their investigation into the evening, with additional units deployed to examine the scene and gather evidence. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, is expected to face significant charges, including at least three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer.
“We are still processing the details of the incident, but based on the suspect’s actions, these charges represent the minimum he could face,” Lt. Klumpp stated.
The incident has left the Malibu community rattled. Carbon Mesa Road, a typically quiet residential area, became the center of a high-stakes operation that disrupted the neighborhood for hours.
“This is such a peaceful area. To have something like this happen so suddenly—it’s really shocking,” Oherlihy said.
Authorities have yet to confirm a motive or whether the suspect has a history of similar behavior.
The LASD urged the public to report any additional information related to the incident and reminded residents to always heed evacuation orders in such situations.
“We’re grateful for the community’s cooperation during this tense situation, which helped ensure everyone’s safety,” LASD said in a statement.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.lacrimestoppers.org.
The investigation remains ongoing, with further details expected to emerge in the coming days.
