LOS ANGELES, CA – A robbery suspect attempting to flee the scene of a crime in a driverless Waymo vehicle was apprehended by Los Angeles police officers Monday evening, marking a bizarre and unusual encounter for law enforcement.
The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. in Mid-City, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Authorities reported that the suspect was involved in an altercation with a security guard at a local grocery store before fleeing and entering a Waymo autonomous vehicle parked nearby.
The suspect’s attempt to evade police took an unexpected turn as the driverless vehicle adhered to its programming. When LAPD officers caught up to the vehicle near South Wilton Place and Country Club Drive, the Waymo car responded to their lights and sirens by pulling over safely to the side of the road, allowing officers to approach.
Officers took the suspect into custody without further incident. The individual’s identity has not been disclosed, and police have not released additional information regarding the alleged robbery or the suspect’s motives for attempting to use the autonomous car as a getaway vehicle.
This case adds to the growing complexities faced by law enforcement as driverless technologies become more integrated into urban environments. Autonomous vehicles, designed to follow traffic rules and respond to emergencies, present unique scenarios for suspects attempting to use them for illicit purposes.
Police continue to investigate the incident, and further details about the robbery and the suspect’s actions are expected to be released in the coming days. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the LAPD.
