LOS ANGELES, CA – A man in his 40s was killed early Sunday after being struck by two vehicles on Sepulveda Boulevard in the North Hills area of the San Fernando Valley, and both drivers left the scene without stopping to provide aid, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The fatal collision happened at about 5 a.m. on September 13, when a black SUV and a silver pickup truck were traveling southbound on Sepulveda Boulevard, south of Parthenia Street.

According to investigators, the pedestrian was crossing westbound on Sepulveda Boulevard outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the two vehicles. Police said both vehicles continued southbound after the collision without stopping, identifying themselves or rendering aid.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the location, where the pedestrian was pronounced dead. His identity had not been released because authorities were still working to notify his next of kin.

Drivers left the scene

The circumstances have left investigators looking for information about both vehicles and their drivers. The LAPD Valley Traffic Division is handling the investigation and is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or was driving through the area at the time to come forward.

Police specifically asked people who were on Sepulveda Boulevard near Parthenia Street around 5 a.m. Sunday to contact detectives if they saw the collision or have information that could help identify either vehicle.

Investigators have described the vehicles as a black SUV and a silver pickup truck. Both were traveling southbound when the pedestrian was struck.

At this stage, police have not publicly identified either driver, and the investigation remains active.

Hit-and-run rewards in Los Angeles

The City of Los Angeles maintains a formal Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund that can provide financial rewards for information that helps authorities identify, apprehend and obtain a conviction or other qualifying resolution involving a hit-and-run offender.

Under the Los Angeles Administrative Code’s hit-and-run reward provisions, the city may offer a reward of up to $50,000 when a hit-and-run results in a death. The program also establishes different maximum rewards for cases involving serious injury, other injuries or property damage.

That program is separate from the underlying criminal investigation and requires information to meet the city’s eligibility requirements before a reward can be paid.

Traffic safety remains a citywide concern

The crash also comes as Los Angeles continues its broader effort to address serious and fatal traffic collisions. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation’s Vision Zero safety programs focus on reducing traffic deaths through roadway improvements, crash analysis and other safety measures. LADOT says its traffic-safety work uses collision data to identify locations and strategies intended to prevent fatal and serious-injury crashes.

The city’s 2024 Vision Zero Safety Study also examines collision patterns and identifies areas where roadway changes can be prioritized based on severe injuries and fatalities. That broader program does not establish a cause for Sunday’s crash, which remains under investigation.

Investigation continues

LAPD detectives are continuing to work to identify the two vehicles and the people who were driving them. The victim’s name remains withheld pending notification of relatives.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about the black SUV or silver pickup truck is being asked to contact Officer Voorhees at 818-644-8027, Officer Takishita at 818-644-8116, or the Valley Traffic Division at 818-644-8114.
