LOS ANGELES, CA – A man was fatally shot by Los Angeles police officers after they responded to a report of a stabbing at a residence in the Hollywood Hills and encountered him armed with a large kitchen knife, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The officer-involved shooting happened Saturday night, Sept. 12, in the 9300 block of Warbler Way, after Hollywood patrol officers responded to a radio call at approximately 9:35 p.m.
When officers arrived at the residence, they found a male victim suffering from stab wounds. Police requested a rescue ambulance for the injured person, who was later transported to a nearby hospital and remained in stable condition, according to LAPD.
While officers were inside the residence, they learned that the alleged suspect was in a bedroom with another male and was still armed with a knife.
Officers encounter armed suspect
Additional officers responded to the residence as police worked to take the suspect into custody.
According to LAPD’s preliminary account, officers formed a team and approached the bedroom where the suspect was located.
As officers approached, they observed the suspect struggling with another male over the knife. Police also said they heard the suspect making statements that he was going to kill the other man.
Officers gave the suspect multiple commands to surrender and drop the weapon, but he refused to comply.
An officer-involved shooting then occurred.
The suspect was struck by gunfire, dropped the knife and was taken into custody. Officers immediately began providing medical aid and requested assistance from the Los Angeles Fire Department.
LAFD personnel responded to the residence, but the suspect did not respond to medical treatment and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Knife recovered at the scene
Investigators recovered a 13-inch kitchen knife with a 7½-inch blade at the residence. LAPD said the weapon was booked into evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
No officers or additional community members were injured during the incident.
The person who suffered the initial stabbing injuries was transported to a nearby hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Police have not publicly disclosed additional details about the victim’s identity or the relationship, if any, between the people involved.
The circumstances leading up to the alleged stabbing also remain under investigation.
LAPD investigation remains preliminary
The LAPD Force Investigation Division is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
The department specifically cautioned that its account is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation. Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses, examine physical and electronic records and analyze forensic evidence.
LAPD said its understanding of the circumstances could change as additional evidence is collected.
The department’s public critical-incident database lists the Sept. 12 shooting as NRF037-26, an officer-involved shooting with hits in the Hollywood Division. The incident is currently listed as having no publicly released video.
That designation reflects the department’s classification of the incident and does not by itself establish whether the use of force complied with department policy or applicable law.
Investigation follows fatal encounter
The shooting occurred after police were initially called to the home because of an apparent violent confrontation involving a knife.
The sequence described by LAPD places the stabbing investigation and the officer-involved shooting inside the same residence. Officers first located the injured person, then learned that the suspected attacker remained inside the home and was armed.
The encounter escalated when officers approached the bedroom and allegedly saw the suspect struggling with another person over the knife.
Police said commands to surrender were given before officers fired.
The suspect’s death is now being investigated separately as part of the department’s review of the use of deadly force.
Information gathered by Street People from the official LAPD account indicates that no officers were injured and that no additional community members were reported injured beyond the person who suffered the initial stab wounds.
Hollywood Hills shooting remains under review
The incident is among the officer-involved shootings currently listed in LAPD’s 2026 critical-incident records. The department’s Force Investigation Division is responsible for investigating incidents involving the use of deadly force by LAPD officers. The department’s Office of the Inspector General also independently reviews officer-involved shootings and other significant uses of force resulting in death or hospitalization.
Investigators will continue reviewing the events leading to the shooting, including the initial stabbing, the suspect’s actions inside the residence, the commands given by officers and the circumstances surrounding the use of deadly force.
At this point, LAPD has not released the names of the officers involved.
The department also has not released additional information about the identity of the man who died through its officer-involved shooting announcement.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the official account may be updated as investigators collect additional evidence.
