LOS ANGELES, CA – Authorities are still searching for a convicted killer who escaped from a prison transport van in Southern California earlier this month. The inmate, identified as 34-year-old Cesar Hernandez, fled custody on December 2 while being transported to the Kern County Superior Courthouse in Delano for a scheduled court appearance.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that Hernandez managed to jump out of the vehicle and evade officers. He was last seen wearing an orange top and orange pants, standard attire for inmates.
Hernandez was convicted of first-degree murder in Los Angeles County in 2019 and sentenced to 25 years to life with the possibility of parole. His escape has raised concerns among local residents and prompted an extensive manhunt across Kern County and surrounding areas.
“CDCR’s top priority is both the safety and security of the people who live and work in our institutions and the surrounding communities,” the department said in a statement. “Investigators have determined the security risk around Delano has subsided, as it is most likely escapee Cesar Hernandez has fled the area.”
Despite reassurances, CDCR acknowledged community concerns, particularly from school districts, and pledged to continue efforts to locate Hernandez.
The search operation has involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including CDCR’s Special Services Unit and Investigative Services Units from North Kern, Kern Valley, and Wasco state prisons. The California Highway Patrol, along with officers from Delano and McFarland police departments, have also joined the effort.
Hernandez is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 161 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. Authorities urge the public not to approach him and to call 911 immediately if he is spotted.
Officials have not disclosed how Hernandez managed to escape the prison van, and the incident has prompted a review of transport security protocols.
The investigation remains ongoing, and law enforcement officials continue to follow leads as they work to track down the fugitive.
