LOS ANGELES, CA – A man accused of brandishing a firearm inside a Target store in El Monte was fatally shot by police following a brief pursuit that ended outside a bank, authorities said Monday.
The incident began when officers from the El Monte Police Department responded to reports of a disturbance involving a man with a gun at the Target located in the 3600 block of Peck Road.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to confront the suspect, but he fled the scene, prompting a police pursuit through Los Angeles County. The chase ended near a Chase bank at the intersection of Tyler Avenue and Valley Boulevard, where the suspect abandoned his vehicle and exited on foot, according to police.
Authorities said an altercation occurred outside the bank, leading officers to open fire. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials have not confirmed whether the suspect fired his weapon during the confrontation, and details surrounding the exchange are still under investigation. Police recovered a firearm at the scene, though further information about the weapon has not been disclosed.
As of late Monday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau had taken over the investigation, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. Detectives are working to determine the events leading up to the shooting, including whether the suspect posed an immediate threat to officers or others.
No officers were injured during the incident, authorities said.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have urged anyone with information about the case to contact law enforcement.
