LOS ANGELES, CA – Traffic on Santa Monica Boulevard briefly came to a halt Sunday night after sheriff’s deputies encountered a man rolling in the roadway near San Vicente Boulevard and stopped approaching vehicles while emergency personnel responded.

Members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s entertainment policing team were flagged down at about 10:40 p.m. after someone reported a man in the street near the busy Santa Monica Boulevard and San Vicente Boulevard intersection.

Deputies found the man moving around in the roadway and became concerned that he could be experiencing some type of medical emergency or other crisis.

Because officers did not immediately know what was causing his behavior, they requested assistance from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and used patrol vehicles and their own positioning to block traffic and prevent him from being struck by passing cars.

The response temporarily brought traffic through the immediate area to a standstill.

Once additional personnel arrived, responders worked to remove the man from the roadway so he could be medically evaluated.

A witness described a difficult effort to control him, saying nearly six people were needed to physically restrain the man before he could eventually be medically sedated. The account also said he continued resisting during the response.

Authorities have not publicly explained what caused the man’s apparent distress.

The available information does not establish whether drugs, alcohol, a mental health crisis or another medical condition played any role, and no such cause has been confirmed.

After responders were able to safely remove him from the roadway, Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel transported him to a local hospital for further treatment.

His current condition has not been publicly disclosed.

The man has also not been identified.

Busy West Hollywood Intersection

The incident unfolded near one of West Hollywood’s most heavily traveled nightlife areas.

The West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station provides law enforcement services for the city and is itself located on North San Vicente Boulevard. The station lists 310-855-8850 as its public contact number.

Santa Monica Boulevard and North San Vicente Boulevard also handle significant pedestrian activity during nighttime hours.

Earlier this year, West Hollywood implemented a nighttime all-pedestrian signal phase at the intersection on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. as part of an effort to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow. City information cited at the time said the intersection can accommodate as many as 2,000 pedestrians per hour during busy evening periods.

That broader pedestrian-safety context helps explain why deputies immediately stopped vehicle movement when they encountered someone behaving unpredictably in the roadway.

It does not, however, indicate that normal traffic conditions contributed to Sunday’s incident.

Deputies Focused on Keeping Man Away From Traffic

The immediate concern for responders was preventing a collision.

With the man apparently unable or unwilling to remain out of active traffic lanes, deputies maintained a protective area until firefighters and paramedics could reach him.

No collision involving the man was reported.

There were also no reports of injuries to motorists, deputies or other pedestrians in the information available about the incident.

Authorities have not said how long Santa Monica Boulevard was obstructed before traffic resumed.

They also have not said whether the man was detained for any criminal offense.

Based on the available information, the response was primarily described as a medical and public-safety intervention rather than an arrest operation.

Street People’s review of the available details found no official diagnosis or explanation for the behavior, meaning any characterization beyond a person apparently in distress would be speculative.

What began as an unusual late-night traffic disruption ultimately ended with the man safely removed from the roadway and transported for medical treatment.

No additional information about his condition or the circumstances leading to the incident has been released.
