LOS ANGELES, CA – A student carrying a large knife was taken into custody after a confrontation involving students at a Westchester school campus Monday afternoon, prompting a shelter-in-place order as frightened students moved away from the scene.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 31 on the campus shared by Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets and WISH Academy High School.

Official Los Angeles Unified School District records confirm that WISH Academy High School is co-located on the Westchester campus at 7400 W. Manchester Ave. alongside Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets.

Cell phone video from the incident showed a teenage boy carrying what appeared to be a large knife as he entered a crowded quad area.

Another boy then approached him.

The student carrying the knife quickly struck the other boy in the face before running away, according to the footage described in the original report. Other students could be heard screaming and moving away from the confrontation.

The second student then ran after him.

One student who witnessed the confrontation described the weapon as notably large and said she left the area as soon as she saw it.

“It was a big knife,” student Kaylin Lewis said. “When the knife was pulled out, I just ran away. The whole thing was surreal.”

Another student, Kaylani Bates, said students had heard rumors about what may have prompted the confrontation but did not know whether those accounts were accurate.

“We heard it was rivalry gangs, but we’re not really sure what happened,” Bates said. “There were a lot of people chasing him.”

Authorities have not confirmed that gang activity was involved, and no verified motive has been publicly released.

That distinction remains important because investigators have not disclosed whether the students knew one another, what happened before the confrontation or why the student arrived in the quad carrying a knife.

School Ordered Students to Shelter in Place

School officials initiated a shelter-in-place order while the incident was being handled.

Officers from the Los Angeles School Police Department responded, and one student was taken into custody.

A Los Angeles Unified spokesperson said school personnel responded to an altercation involving a Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets student and a student from the co-located charter school, as well as several people who were not authorized to be on the campus.

The district’s own records confirm that the Westchester campus is a shared educational site. Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets serves grades 9 through 12, while WISH Academy High School also operates at the same Manchester Avenue address.

The school calendar also confirms that Aug. 31 was a scheduled instructional day at Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets.

Authorities have not explained who the additional unauthorized individuals were, how they entered the campus or whether any of them were detained.

School Officials Dispute Severity of Attack

The available descriptions of the incident differ in an important respect.

Video showed the armed student striking another boy during the confrontation, while school officials later characterized the physical injury as minor.

According to school officials, the student who was struck suffered a minor cut and was treated by a campus nurse.

Los Angeles Unified later said that students and staff were safe and that there was no continuing threat to the campus.

“Students and staff are safe, no one was injured and there is no ongoing threat to our campus,” the district said in a statement. “Instruction has resumed as normal.”

The statement appears to use “no one was injured” in the context of significant injuries requiring additional emergency care, since officials separately said one student sustained a minor cut and received treatment from the campus nurse.

The district said additional Los Angeles School Police patrols would be deployed around the campus as a precaution.

“Please know that we take any incident involving student safety extremely seriously,” the district said. “The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority.”

Parent Questions Timing of Notification

The incident also raised questions from at least one parent about how quickly families were notified.

Parents reportedly received an email from school officials roughly an hour after police arrived.

One parent, who asked not to be identified, said his child was unable to enter a classroom after the shelter-in-place procedures began and described learning about the situation from his child before receiving information from the school.

“To have a child locked in a hallway by himself, unable to get into a classroom because it’s a lockdown and you can’t reopen the door? That’s insane because anything could’ve happened to that kid in the hallway,” the parent said.

He also expressed concern about students who had been outside when the incident unfolded.

“To not know what’s going on and to have your son or daughter call you before the school does, it’s really scary to know he had to go through that alone,” he said.

The source material does not establish how many students were outside classrooms during the shelter-in-place order or whether any students were actually confronted by the armed teenager after the initial altercation.

Shared Campus Serves Hundreds of Students

Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets describes itself as a grades 9-12 Los Angeles Unified school with roughly 600 students and three magnet programs.

WISH Academy High School is an independent public charter school operating at the same 7400 W. Manchester Ave. campus. Its official website lists that location for grades 9 through 12.

That co-location helps explain why students associated with two different schools were present on the same property when Monday’s confrontation occurred.

Los Angeles Unified documents also identify both WISH Academy High School and WISH Community School as co-located charter programs on the Westchester site.

The incident therefore involved students attending separate schools while sharing the broader campus.

Several Questions Remain

Authorities have not released the name or age of the student taken into custody.

It is also unclear what charges, if any, will be filed.

Police have not publicly explained where the knife came from, whether the student brought it onto campus earlier in the day or whether investigators recovered additional weapons.

No confirmed motive has been announced.

Likewise, authorities have not substantiated student speculation about gang rivalry or disclosed whether there had been earlier disputes between those involved.

The district said normal instruction resumed after the immediate threat was resolved and that additional school police patrols would be present around campus.

For now, the investigation remains focused on determining what led to the confrontation, how unauthorized individuals entered the property and why a student was carrying a large knife in a crowded area of the campus.
