LOS ANGELES, CA – A 49-year-old man suspected of attempting to carjack three women in a single day across Los Angeles has been arrested after a nurse at a local hospital recognized him from news reports and alerted authorities, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).
The suspect, identified as Maurice Latorre, was taken into custody Thursday at LA General Medical Center, where he was receiving treatment. The arrest came just moments after the LAPD held a press conference seeking public assistance in locating him.
The alleged carjacking attempts occurred on Sunday, Nov. 9, in Lincoln Heights and Boyle Heights, all within a few miles of each other. Security footage captured each incident, providing investigators with a clear image of the suspect.
The first attempted carjacking took place at approximately 10 a.m. at a gas station on North Broadway in Lincoln Heights. Surveillance video showed a man, later identified as Latorre, watching a woman pump gas before attempting to force his way into her car. The woman managed to push him out, and the suspect walked away.
A few hours later, a second incident unfolded in a nearby parking lot. A woman with two young children was targeted as she approached her vehicle. The suspect smashed a window and tried to gain entry while the woman and children screamed and rushed into the car. Again, the man fled the scene on foot.
The final incident occurred just before 5 p.m. at another gas station on East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue in Boyle Heights. Video footage showed Latorre engaging a woman in conversation before trying to force his way into her car, pulling her to the ground during a struggle. The woman managed to escape and return to her vehicle.
“Fortunately, the victims were able to fight back and get away,” said LAPD Detective Joe Diaz Ibarra. “But we were very concerned that his actions could escalate.”
Authorities revealed that Latorre has a history of mental illness and violent behavior, heightening fears about the potential for further attacks.
Captain Chris Mayberry of the LAPD’s Hollenbeck Division emphasized the urgency of the case, noting that Latorre appeared to be specifically targeting women. “This series of crimes created significant tension within the community. Protecting our residents, especially vulnerable individuals, is our top priority,” he said.
The LAPD credited the vigilance of the hospital nurse who recognized Latorre and called police, leading to his swift apprehension.
To help prevent similar crimes, authorities offered safety tips for the public:
- Remain aware of your surroundings.
- Avoid distractions such as focusing on your phone in public places.
- If faced with an attempted carjacking, draw attention to yourself and fight back if necessary.
The investigation remains ongoing, with detectives reviewing evidence and conducting interviews to ensure justice for the victims. Latorre is expected to face multiple charges, including attempted carjacking and assault.
