LOS ANGELES, CA – Federal agents conducted a search of the home of Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Brian Williams on Tuesday following allegations that he made a bomb threat targeting City Hall earlier this year.
The investigation, confirmed by the office of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Wednesday, has led to Williams being placed on administrative leave. Details surrounding the exact date and time of the alleged threat have not been disclosed, but a spokesperson for Mayor Bass emphasized that an initial investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department determined there was no immediate threat to public safety.
Role in City Governance
Williams, who was appointed by Mayor Bass as Deputy Mayor of Public Safety in February 2023, oversees the city’s critical safety agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, and the police forces responsible for security at Los Angeles International Airport and the Port of Los Angeles.
Before his current role, Williams served as deputy mayor under former Mayor James Hahn, where he managed departments such as Public Works and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation.
Federal Investigation
Due to Williams’ oversight of the LAPD and his position of influence within public safety operations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead in the investigation. When contacted for comment, an FBI spokesperson declined to provide details, calling it “inappropriate” to discuss an ongoing matter.
Mayor Bass expressed concern over the allegations. “Mayor Bass takes this matter very seriously,” her spokesperson said in a statement. “We are fully cooperating with federal authorities and await further details as the investigation unfolds.”
The spokesperson did not provide additional information about the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat or the outcome of Tuesday’s search of Williams’ residence.
Williams has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. It remains unclear whether he will be formally charged or if additional disciplinary actions will be taken.
The case highlights the heightened scrutiny surrounding officials in positions of power, particularly those tasked with ensuring public safety. City officials have not commented on potential impacts this investigation could have on day-to-day operations or ongoing projects managed under Williams’ leadership.
Further details are expected as the FBI and other agencies continue their inquiries into the matter.
