LOS ANGELES, CA – For Erik Vazquez, the owner of La Esquinita Mexican Grill in Long Beach, opening his own restaurant was a lifelong dream. But in the three years since the restaurant began serving customers, he has faced repeated challenges, including a string of break-ins that have left him frustrated but determined to continue.
“It’s been difficult because of everything that has happened to us—vandalism, the burglaries,” Vazquez said.
The most recent incident occurred last month when surveillance footage captured a masked suspect using a crowbar to try to force their way through the restaurant’s front door. “I think they’re professional thieves,” Vazquez said. “They have specialized tools and they break in really fast.”
While the suspect was unable to enter during this latest attempt, it marked the sixth time that La Esquinita has been targeted by burglars. Two of the previous break-ins were successful, though Vazquez said the thieves left empty-handed.
“They weren’t able to get in [this time], but they did cause damage,” he said. “I have to replace the locks, the doors, and they damaged the glass, which is a big cost.”
The restaurant has posted a sign to inform would-be thieves that there is no cash kept on-site, but the repeated incidents have been discouraging. Vazquez has reached out to the Long Beach Police Department, which is investigating and working to identify the suspects.
Despite the challenges, Vazquez remains committed to his business and the community. “It’s my dream come true, and because of what has happened, I’m not going to give up on my dream,” he said.
He hopes the police will increase patrols in the area to deter further break-ins and prevent other small businesses from becoming targets.
La Esquinita continues to serve its loyal customers, and Vazquez is optimistic that the difficulties will not overshadow the joy of pursuing his passion.
Anyone with information about the break-ins is urged to contact Long Beach police.
