LOS ANGELES, Nov. 16 – Grammy-winning rapper Lil Durk, born Durk Banks, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to federal charges of conspiracy and murder-for-hire related to a failed assassination attempt in 2022 that left a family member of Georgia rapper Quando Rondo dead. The case has drawn intense public scrutiny, highlighting the intersection of celebrity, organized crime, and the judicial system.
Banks appeared in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom to face an updated federal indictment accusing him of orchestrating an attack on Tyquian Bowman, better known as Quando Rondo. Prosecutors allege the attempted killing was retaliation for the murder of a close associate of Banks in Atlanta. Charges against Banks include conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, use of interstate facilities in furtherance of murder, and firearms violations, including the use of a machine gun.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Patricia Donahue ordered Banks held without bond, pending a detention hearing scheduled for December 12. Additional proceedings include a status conference on November 25 and a tentative trial start date of January 7, though delays are anticipated.
The indictment alleges that Banks and five members of his Only the Family (OTF) rap collective coordinated travel from Chicago to Los Angeles in August 2022 with the intent of ambushing Bowman. Surveillance efforts reportedly identified Bowman’s location at a Los Angeles hotel, triggering the group’s plan to attack.
The resulting confrontation near the Beverly Center involved at least 18 rounds fired at Bowman’s vehicle. Bowman survived, but a family member traveling with him was fatally shot.
Prosecutors assert that Banks financed the operation, paying for travel and accommodations at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, and used encrypted communication to organize the attack. The other defendants named in the case include Kavon London Grant, Deandre Dontrell Wilson, Keith Jones, David Brian Lindsey, and Asa Houston, all of whom face charges of murder-for-hire and conspiracy.
The high-profile case casts a shadow over Banks’ meteoric rise in the music industry. Known for his platinum-selling albums The Voice and 7220, as well as his Grammy win for Best Melodic Rap Performance, Banks has become a prominent figure in hip-hop. His ninth studio album is set for release on November 22, a date that now arrives amid significant legal turmoil.
Banks’ attorneys have yet to comment on the specifics of the case but are expected to mount a vigorous defense as the trial approaches.
As the proceedings unfold, the case is likely to continue fueling debate over the challenges of celebrity culture, accountability, and the intersection of fame and criminal allegations.
