LOS ANGELES, CA – A gas station clerk in La Puente remains hospitalized after being shot at point-blank range during a robbery attempt that was caught on surveillance footage, according to authorities and family members.
The incident occurred Friday, February 28, at an ARCO station located at the intersection of Workman Mill and Don Julio roads. Security video reviewed by police shows a man dressed entirely in black entering the convenience store and immediately brandishing a firearm. The clerk, identified as Miguel Cid, raised his hands in the air as the suspect demanded money.
Cid was seen moving toward the cash register before the gunman opened fire, striking him. The suspect then fled the store without taking any money, according to a family member.
Cid’s brother, Richard Cid, who was arriving at the store shortly after the shooting, said he saw the armed man exiting the business and immediately turned and ran. The gunman reportedly followed him out of the store before escaping. No further injuries were reported.
Paramedics transported Miguel Cid to a local hospital. His current condition has not been disclosed, but family members say he remains under medical care.
Authorities have not officially identified the suspect, though family members believe the gunman is in custody. Police have not confirmed whether charges have been filed.
“My brother had his hands up… he was walking toward the register, but I think the guy did get a little scared,” Richard Cid said. “Why did he shoot?”
The victim’s family has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help cover medical expenses following the attack.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact law enforcement.
