LOS ANGELES, CA – A man armed with a knife was taken into custody early Thursday morning following a lengthy standoff with police after he allegedly attempted a burglary at an occupied Hollywood Hills residence, authorities said.
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to a report of a “hot prowl” burglary—a term used for break-ins that occur while residents are home—at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The incident occurred at a property located in the 3100 block of Hollyridge Drive, according to police officials.
Authorities said the residents of the home, who were inside at the time of the attempted burglary, were the ones to alert police. No injuries were reported among the occupants, officials said.
When officers arrived, they found a male suspect, described as being between 35 and 50 years old, armed with a knife and refusing to cooperate with commands to surrender.
The situation quickly escalated into a standoff that lasted several hours, prompting officers to request assistance from SWAT teams and mental health professionals at the scene.
The specialized units arrived at approximately 10:30 p.m., and negotiations with the suspect continued through the night. Police maintained a secure perimeter, and nearby residents were advised to remain indoors as the situation unfolded.
After several hours, the suspect was eventually taken into custody without further incident at approximately 2:20 a.m.
Authorities have not yet identified the suspect, and it remains unclear whether he has any criminal history or mental health issues that may have contributed to the incident.
Investigators are working to determine whether the suspect was targeting the residence specifically or if the burglary attempt was random.
The LAPD stated that the investigation is ongoing and additional details will be released as they become available.
