LOS ANGELES, CA – A high-speed police chase that began in downtown Los Angeles ended dramatically in Santa Monica on Thursday night, with the suspects crashing their stolen vehicle and attempting to flee on foot before being apprehended.
The pursuit started shortly after 8 p.m., when officers from the Los Angeles Police Department began following a stolen gray Infiniti sedan traveling westbound on the 10 Freeway. The driver, described as reckless, reached speeds of over 120 mph, weaving dangerously through traffic and even using the shoulder to bypass other vehicles.
The chase, spanning approximately 11 miles, brought the vehicle into Santa Monica in a matter of minutes. Once off the freeway, the suspect entered city streets, further escalating the danger to the public. Near Pico Boulevard and 34th Street, the Infiniti collided with another vehicle but continued fleeing the scene.
The pursuit came to a halt when the suspect abandoned the vehicle in a parking lot near 31st Street and Donald Douglas Loop North, close to Santa Monica Airport. Both the driver and a passenger attempted to escape on foot but were quickly captured by pursuing officers.
Authorities later confirmed that the Infiniti had been reported stolen.
The crash at Pico Boulevard resulted in damage to another vehicle, but no immediate injuries were reported. Police have not disclosed the identities of the suspects or whether additional charges, beyond vehicle theft and evasion, will be pursued.
High-speed pursuits like this one highlight the inherent risks to public safety, with speeds exceeding 120 mph creating a perilous situation for drivers, pedestrians, and officers. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have emphasized their commitment to ensuring accountability in cases of reckless behavior on public roadways.
The incident marks another reminder of the challenges law enforcement faces in balancing pursuit protocols with public safety in densely populated urban areas.
