LOS ANGELES, Nov 16 – A Southern California high school choir teacher, Yessenia Navarro Garcia, has been arrested following allegations of an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student. Garcia, 37, who has been the director of the Vocal Music Program at Santa Ana High School, was apprehended by police after agreeing to meet with the student in a location in Santa Ana, where she was taken into custody.
According to the Santa Ana Police Department, officers were initially called to Santa Ana High School on Friday evening after receiving a report from the student, a senior at the school, who claimed to have been involved in sexual relations with Garcia for approximately six months.
Authorities say that during the investigation, Garcia exchanged texts with the student arranging to meet, which led to her arrest. “Garcia admitted to all of the sexual acts that the victim reported,” police said in a statement.
Garcia, a resident of Orange, has been employed as a full-time choir teacher at Santa Ana High School for the past five years, and her career spans multiple Southern California schools including Raymond Cree Middle School in Palm Springs and El Sol Science and Arts Academy in Santa Ana. Despite the serious charges, Garcia’s choir class profile remains publicly accessible on the school’s website as of the publication of this article.
The teacher was booked into Santa Ana Jail on several sexual assault-related charges, with bail set at $100,000. Police are asking anyone with information or additional victims to contact Detective M. Tapia at (714) 245-8379 or reach out to Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-OCCS.
Detectives have not ruled out the possibility that more victims may come forward, given Garcia’s tenure and her role in multiple schools across the region. This incident has shocked the local community, especially as Garcia had been regarded as a trusted educator who led the SAHS Alumni Choir and other programs since 2017.
School officials have yet to make a public statement regarding the arrest, although parents and staff are expected to receive further updates as the investigation continues. The case raises concerns about safeguarding students and highlights the importance of maintaining vigilance in school settings to prevent such violations of trust.
The Santa Ana Police Department is continuing its investigation, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
