LOS ANGELES, Nov 15 – A former U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison on Friday for orchestrating the murder of his wife, Claudia Sanchez Reyes, in a chilling crime that underscored the dangers of domestic abuse and the deadly consequences of calculated violence.
Eddy Reyes, 38, who had been in federal custody since his arrest in 2021, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of kidnapping resulting in death. His conviction stemmed from his role in masterminding the brutal slaying of his wife in 2016.
The tragic events leading to Claudia’s death were revealed by the U.S. Department of Justice, detailing a relationship marred by manipulation, abuse, and eventual violence. Reyes met Claudia in El Salvador in 2014, and the couple moved to the United States, where they had a son. However, their marriage quickly deteriorated, with Claudia filing two restraining orders against Reyes due to domestic violence.
In 2016, after growing suspicious of his wife’s loyalty, Reyes resorted to a deadly plot. Instead of seeking counseling or legal recourse, he enlisted the help of his brother, known only as “P.O.,” a former gang member, to kill Claudia.
On May 6, 2016, Reyes lured Claudia under false pretenses, telling her they would have dinner together. When he picked her up in a rented vehicle, he misled her by claiming the car was a gift. Reyes drove her to his mother’s house in Orange, California, where the murder took place. As the couple entered the garage, P.O. ambushed Claudia, strangling her with a seatbelt. The 21-year-old was killed in a senseless act of violence.
After the murder, Reyes and his brother took elaborate steps to cover their tracks, including sending false messages from Claudia’s phone to her workplace and family, making it appear as though she had abandoned her life and son. Reyes filed a missing person report but showed little interest in cooperating with investigators.
A breakthrough in the case came when coworkers reported overhearing heated arguments between the couple on the day Claudia went missing. Detectives uncovered crucial evidence, including blood in the rental vehicle and the scent of a deceased body, which led to Reyes’ arrest.
During the sentencing, U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada condemned the crime as “despicable” and “cold-blooded.” U.S. District Judge Josephine L. Staton described the murder as “heinous” and a “product of pure evil,” words that resonated with those who had followed the case closely and sought justice for Claudia.
Eddy Reyes will serve the next four decades in prison, while Claudia’s family continues to mourn the loss of a daughter, mother, and beloved family member.
