LOS ANGELES, CA – A high-speed police chase ended in tragedy on Wednesday afternoon when a fleeing suspect caused a violent multi-vehicle collision in Orange County, resulting in the death of an innocent woman, according to authorities.
The incident began when Fullerton police observed a man allegedly committing a theft near North Gilbert Street and West Malvern Avenue. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Anthony Hanzel of Anaheim, fled the scene in a white Nissan Rogue.
“Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle. The suspect fled, initiating a pursuit,” the Fullerton Police Department said in a statement.
As Hanzel tried to escape, he was involved in a non-injury collision near Brookhurst Road and Orangethorpe Avenue. Despite the crash, the suspect continued to evade officers, leading them onto the westbound 91 Freeway.
Hanzel exited the freeway at Knott Avenue, where Fullerton officers lost sight of his vehicle. La Palma police picked up the chase after spotting the Rogue in the area of La Palma Avenue and Walker Street.
At approximately 12:50 p.m., Hanzel sped through a red light at the intersection of La Palma Avenue and Moody Street. He struck a blue BMW in a catastrophic collision that was recorded by a nearby security camera.
“I was at the intersection at a red light, and I saw a police chase happening. The cars came straight at me going the other way,” said Lauren Lau, a driver whose car sustained minor damage in the crash. “There was a complete T-bone. Those two cars hit me and then swerved off to the side.”
The impact was devastating, and the driver of the BMW, a woman in her 60s, suffered severe injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released pending family notification.
Hanzel sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Police confirmed that he would be booked on charges including petty theft, hit-and-run, and felony evading once he is medically cleared.
Residents expressed frustration and grief over the incident, highlighting the dangers of high-speed chases in densely populated areas.
“This is a heartbreaking loss of life,” said a witness who asked to remain anonymous. “It’s hard to believe someone would put so many lives at risk to avoid accountability.”
The Fullerton Police Department is working with La Palma authorities to investigate the series of events that led to the fatal collision. Authorities have urged anyone with additional information or video evidence to contact investigators.
This fatal incident underscores the perils of police pursuits and has reignited discussions about balancing public safety and law enforcement tactics during high-speed chases.
