LOS ANGELES, CA – Miguel Angel Aguilar, a well-known fitness influencer and founder of a nationwide gym chain, died Saturday after succumbing to injuries sustained during a follow-home robbery in West Los Angeles earlier this year, his family confirmed.
Aguilar, 40, had been hospitalized since September 13, when he was shot in the head outside his home on the 11400 block of North Thurston Circle in Bel Air. He and his wife were confronted by four armed suspects during the attempted robbery, according to authorities.
The entrepreneur was the CEO and founder of Self Made Training Facility, a fitness franchise with 30 locations across California and other states, including Arizona, Texas, Ohio, Nevada, Florida, and Virginia. Aguilar’s social media presence included more than 52,000 Instagram followers, where he promoted fitness and entrepreneurship.
“It’s some kind of Christmas miracle that Miguel fought as long as he did,” his family said in a statement on Instagram. “We are deeply saddened to announce his passing after a courageous three-month battle. Miguel died peacefully surrounded by loved ones.”
Aguilar was remembered as a visionary leader, mentor, husband, and father.
“His passion for fitness and his entrepreneurial spirit left an enduring legacy,” the statement added. “Miguel revolutionized personal training, inspiring countless individuals to pursue fitness and business goals.”
Charges Filed Against Suspects
Three men from Oakland—Mahki Jamir Taylor, Jason Alexander Melara, and Daymonee Christian Johnson, all 19—face charges of murder, robbery, and assault with a firearm in connection with the incident.
The suspects were also charged with shooting at an occupied motor vehicle and attempted second-degree robbery, authorities said.
The initial murder charge stemmed from the death of a fourth suspect, identified as Mario Melara, Jason Melara’s brother, who was fatally injured during the confrontation. Officials have not clarified whether his injuries were caused by one of the victims or another suspect.
Before Aguilar’s death, Taylor was additionally charged with attempted murder and inflicting great bodily injury.
The three suspects were arrested in Northern California on October 10 and pleaded not guilty during their November 14 court appearance. They remain in custody without bail and are scheduled to return to court on January 7.
