LOS ANGELES, CA – A Los Angeles firefighter and six other people were injured Sunday afternoon when a Los Angeles Fire Department vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle collision in South Los Angeles, sending all seven patients to local hospitals, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The crash was reported at approximately 2:30 p.m. on September 13, 2026, near 11928 S. Figueroa Street in the Vermont Vista neighborhood.

The LAFD said the collision involved three civilian vehicles and one LAFD vehicle. One patient required extrication from a vehicle as firefighters and paramedics worked at the scene.

Seven people were ultimately identified as patients, including one LAFD member.

Seven people taken to hospitals

According to the fire department’s later update, all seven patients were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

The department did not provide individual medical conditions for the patients in its initial public alerts. The available information also did not identify the firefighter or the other people involved in the collision.

The LAFD initially reported that one person required extrication, indicating that at least one of the vehicles was damaged badly enough for specialized rescue equipment to be used.

The department dispatched a large number of emergency resources to the scene, including fire engines, rescue ambulances and other specialized units.

Fire department vehicle involved in collision

The LAFD confirmed that both a firetruck and an engine were involved in the traffic accident, although its later update described the crash as involving one LAFD vehicle along with three civilian vehicles.

The department’s public alert identified the incident as INC#1052 and said the Los Angeles Police Department was also at the scene.

The LAFD’s incident alert said the Los Angeles Department of Transportation was requested to assist with traffic control while emergency crews worked at the crash site.

LAFD also advised drivers to avoid the area because of expected traffic delays.

LAPD handling the investigation

The Los Angeles Fire Department said LAPD would handle the investigation into the collision. The department listed the LAPD incident number as 2463.

The available official information does not establish how the collision occurred, which vehicle initiated the crash or whether speed, traffic conditions or another factor contributed.

Those details remain part of the investigation and should not be inferred from the number of vehicles involved or the severity of the damage.

Crash occurred on a major South L.A. corridor

The collision occurred on Figueroa Street in Vermont Vista, an area where city transportation officials have continued to address traffic and pedestrian safety.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation has documented traffic-safety work in South Los Angeles, including projects and roadway changes intended to reduce serious collisions and improve conditions for people walking, biking and driving.

LADOT has also conducted pedestrian and bicycle counts in the Vermont Vista area, including locations around Figueroa Street and Imperial Highway. Those broader transportation programs provide context about the roadway but do not establish a connection between any particular safety project and Sunday’s crash.

The incident also illustrates the particular risks faced by emergency crews operating on busy streets. Fire department vehicles responding to emergencies must navigate regular traffic while moving toward calls, making traffic conditions and roadway access important parts of emergency response operations.

Investigation remains ongoing

The seven injured people were transported to local hospitals after the September 13 collision, and the LAFD confirmed that one of those patients was a member of the department. The official fire department alerts did not provide further information about the patients’ conditions.

LAPD is responsible for investigating the crash, while the LAFD has documented the emergency response and confirmed the number of vehicles and patients involved.

As the investigation continues, additional information about the circumstances of the collision, the vehicles involved and the condition of those injured could be released by authorities.
