LOS ANGELES, CA – Emergency responders successfully recovered a woman from a ledge at Parking Structure #4 on the 1300 block of 2nd Street in Santa Monica early Friday morning, following reports of a potential suicide attempt.
Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department, the Fire Department, and support personnel from Legion and Downtown Ambassadors arrived at the scene after receiving a call. An SMAlert notification was issued at 9:16 a.m., and a large inflatable airbag was deployed in the adjacent 2nd Court alley, which borders the Promenade on its western side.
Witnesses described seeing a woman sitting precariously on a ledge as law enforcement officers engaged her in conversation in an effort to de-escalate the situation.
Preliminary reports suggest that the woman may be homeless and had been seen near the parking structure in the days leading up to the incident. Witnesses said her behavior in recent days appeared as though she was surveying the area.
The woman was safely removed from the structure and is now receiving care. Authorities have not disclosed further details about her condition or whether additional support services will be provided.
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges of addressing mental health and homelessness in urban areas. Santa Monica authorities have emphasized the importance of community vigilance and providing resources to individuals in crisis.
If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, authorities encourage reaching out to local resources or national hotlines for immediate assistance.
