A driver remains in critical condition following a rockslide that struck his van along Highway 18 in the San Bernardino Mountains on Friday morning. The incident, which occurred near the Crest Forest area in Crestline, prompted road closures and raised concerns about ongoing safety in the region.
Rockslide Reported Around 8 a.m.
According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the rockslide was reported at approximately 8 a.m. when a section of the mountainside collapsed. A large boulder crushed the front of a Sprinter van, leaving the driver with life-threatening injuries. There were no other passengers in the vehicle, and emergency responders swiftly transported the victim to a nearby trauma center.
Highway Closures and Road Safety Alerts
In response to the incident, both lanes of Highway 18 were closed throughout the morning while crews worked to clear the debris. Highway 330 was also shut down as a precaution. Authorities advised motorists, especially those heading to Big Bear for Octoberfest, to check with Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol for updates on road conditions.
