LOS ANGELES, CA – A landmark Creole-style restaurant in Los Angeles is seeking the public’s help in identifying suspects involved in two separate burglaries that caused thousands of dollars in losses and damages during the holiday season.
Harold & Belle’s, a fixture in the Jefferson Park neighborhood, has been serving the community since 1969 and is widely recognized as a culinary institution along the area’s “New Orleans” corridor.
Restaurant owner Ryan Legaux, whose family business has spanned three generations, said the first break-in occurred on December 21, just one day before the restaurant was set to host a holiday event for children.
Surveillance footage captured at least three suspects using a crowbar to force open the doors of the establishment. Once inside, the burglars focused on the restaurant’s liquor supply, stealing a large quantity of alcohol.
“We literally had Santa Claus coming here the next day to give out toys to some kids,” Legaux said, describing the disappointment of the burglary just hours before their planned celebration.
After the restaurant spent money to replace the damaged door, thieves struck again days later, this time making off with expensive kitchen equipment, further impacting operations.
Longtime customers and community members, such as Hughie Barnes, expressed support for the restaurant, emphasizing its cultural importance and resilience.
“My husband used to bring us here when the kids were small. It’s celebrating our culture,” Barnes said. “I’m glad they’re resilient. That’s why they’ve been here so many years, they’re resilient.”
In response to the setbacks, Legaux released the surveillance video in the hopes that someone might recognize the suspects and assist authorities in identifying and apprehending those responsible.
A GoFundMe campaign has also been launched to help the restaurant recover from the losses, replace stolen equipment, and upgrade its security systems.
“We just wanted people to be aware, to be careful, make sure they lock up their homes and businesses,” Legaux said, emphasizing the importance of vigilance following the break-ins.
Despite the financial setback, Legaux said the restaurant has reopened and resumed business by Monday morning, continuing its 55-year tradition of serving authentic Creole dishes to the local community.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the burglaries to contact local law enforcement or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
The investigation remains ongoing, and updates will be provided as new details emerge.
