LOS ANGELES, CA – A tragic incident unfolded Monday afternoon in Rancho Cucamonga when a 2-year-old boy was fatally shot by his 7-year-old brother after the older child found a gun inside a parked vehicle, authorities said.
The Sheriff’s Department reported that the shooting occurred just before 4 p.m. in a parking lot located at 8250 Day Creek Boulevard. According to investigators, the two children were inside the vehicle when the 7-year-old located a firearm stored in the glovebox.
The 2-year-old was struck by gunfire and sustained critical injuries. Emergency services rushed the child to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not disclosed whether any adults were present at the time of the shooting or why the firearm was accessible to the children.
“This is a deeply tragic incident,” a sheriff’s department spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with the family during this incredibly difficult time.”
The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division has taken over the case, and a report has been sent to the District Attorney’s Office for further review. No arrests have been announced, and details about potential charges against the firearm’s owner or others involved remain unclear.
The incident has reignited discussions about firearm safety, particularly the importance of secure storage to prevent children from accessing guns. Advocacy groups emphasize that keeping firearms locked away and unloaded can prevent such tragedies.
