LOS ANGELES, CA – A police pursuit along the 5 Freeway in Los Angeles nearly ended in catastrophe Monday night, when a suspect’s vehicle caught fire and threatened to explode during a high-speed chase, authorities said.
The pursuit began when California Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop a car reportedly missing visible license plates. The driver refused to pull over, prompting a chase that spanned multiple freeways, including the 710 and 5.
According to officials, the suspect drove erratically through Elysian Valley, and as the vehicle sped along the northbound 5 Freeway, sparks were seen flying from the undercarriage. Witnesses reported seeing flames erupt from beneath the car, suggesting the vehicle was moments away from a possible explosion.
Despite the vehicle’s compromised condition, the suspect continued driving. The pursuit came to an end when the car finally stopped along the shoulder of the freeway near Elysian Valley. Officers quickly moved in, detaining the driver without further incident.
Authorities have not identified the suspect and did not say whether additional charges beyond the traffic violation are being considered. It remains unclear if the suspect is connected to any other ongoing investigations.
Emergency crews responded to inspect the vehicle, but no injuries were reported in connection with the chase. The incident briefly impacted traffic as officials secured the scene and removed the disabled car from the roadway.
The California Highway Patrol has not released further details, and the investigation is ongoing.
