LOS ANGELES, CA – A suspected burglar was shot and killed, and two others were injured and arrested, after a homeowner in San Bernardino County opened fire during a reported break-in at his residence earlier this week, authorities said.
The incident unfolded shortly after 9 p.m. on March 4, when deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department were called to a home in the 23000 block of Grand Terrace Road in the city of Grand Terrace. According to investigators, the homeowner reported that three individuals had broken into his residence. Fearing for his safety, the homeowner armed himself and fired multiple rounds at the intruders.
The suspects fled the home in a white sedan. Minutes later, at approximately 9:28 p.m., deputies from the Loma Linda station were dispatched to a nearby 76 gas station on Redlands Boulevard, where a man was reported to be suffering from a gunshot wound.
Authorities identified the injured man as one of the alleged burglary suspects. He was accompanied by a 15-year-old boy, also believed to have taken part in the attempted burglary. Deputies detained the juvenile, and the adult male was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Roughly 30 minutes later, San Bernardino Police responded to a separate hospital where a third suspect, identified as Marquez Jackson, had arrived with a gunshot wound. Jackson underwent surgery and survived. He was later booked on charges of robbery and murder upon his release from the hospital.
According to California law, individuals involved in a felony during which someone is killed—regardless of who caused the fatality—can be charged with murder. The juvenile suspect was also arrested and faces the same charges.
Investigators believe a fourth suspect may have been involved in the burglary and remains at large. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased suspect, pending family notification.
The homeowner has not been charged, and the sheriff’s department has indicated that the shooting appears to be a case of self-defense, though the investigation is ongoing.
