LOS ANGELES, CA – Irvine police are searching for a man accused of violently attacking a golfer at San Joaquin Golf Course after allegedly chasing him, grabbing a golf club from his cart and striking him in the head.
The incident happened during the evening of Aug. 29, according to investigators with the Irvine Police Department.
Police said the confrontation began after a golfer encountered a man who had reportedly run across the golf course.
The golfer confronted him about being on the course.
Moments later, investigators said, the encounter escalated.
According to police, the man began chasing the golfer as he attempted to leave the area.
“The golfer tried to get away in his golf cart, but the suspect caught up, took a golf club from the cart, and struck the golfer in the head,” investigators said.
The suspect then fled.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the extent of the golfer’s injuries, whether he required hospitalization or whether he was able to provide investigators with a detailed account immediately after the attack.
Police have also not said what prompted the suspect to run across the golf course in the first place.
Golf Club Allegedly Taken From Victim’s Cart
One of the unusual elements of the investigation is that the weapon was apparently not carried onto the course by the attacker.
Instead, police say the suspect took a club belonging to the golfer from the cart during the confrontation and used it to strike him.
Authorities have not specified what type of club was used.
The original report refers to the victim being struck with his own driver, while the police account quoted in the information provided describes the object more generally as a golf club.
Investigators have not said whether the club was recovered afterward or whether it is being held as evidence.
Suspect Remains Unidentified
Police have not announced an arrest.
Investigators released images of the person they are trying to identify and are asking anyone who recognizes him to contact the department.
Authorities have not provided additional publicly verified information about the suspect’s identity, age or residence.
They also have not said whether investigators believe the man had any previous connection to the golfer.
Nothing in the information released so far indicates that the two knew one another before the encounter.
Motive Still Unclear
The sequence described by investigators begins with the golfer confronting the man after he allegedly ran across the course.
What happened before that moment remains unclear.
Police have not explained why the suspect was on the property, whether he was participating in any activity at the golf course or whether another incident had occurred before the golfer encountered him.
Authorities also have not said whether alcohol, drugs or any medical or behavioral issue may have been involved.
Without additional information from investigators, any explanation for the suspect’s behavior would be speculative.
Irvine Police Seeking Public Assistance
The case is being investigated by the Irvine Police Department.
The department operates around the clock, according to the City of Irvine, with members of the public able to contact police through the department at 1 Civic Center Plaza.
Police are specifically asking anyone with information about the golf course attack, or anyone who recognizes the man shown in the images released by investigators, to contact Detective J. Sanders at 949-724-7233.
The department has not said whether surveillance cameras, witness accounts or other evidence from the course have provided additional leads.
For now, the suspect remains unidentified and the circumstances that led from a confrontation on the course to a violent blow to the golfer’s head remain under investigation.
