LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles police are investigating the death of a 54-year-old homeless man who was found unresponsive in an alley in the Exposition Park area late Tuesday night, with authorities treating the case as a homicide while investigators work to determine exactly how he died.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 10:07 p.m. to the 1200 block of West Leighton Avenue, between Normandie and Budlong avenues, according to information provided by the Los Angeles Police Department.

The circumstances behind the initial call were not immediately disclosed.

When first responders arrived, they found an adult man in the alley who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police described the victim as a 54-year-old Black man experiencing homelessness.

His name has not yet been publicly released.

Cause of Death Has Not Been Determined

Preliminary information indicated that the victim may have shown signs of blunt-force trauma, but that detail had not been independently confirmed by law enforcement as of early Wednesday.

Authorities have not announced an official cause or manner of death.

That determination will ultimately require further examination, including the work of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, which handles investigations into sudden, violent and suspicious deaths throughout the county.

Until that process is completed, the precise injuries suffered by the man and the medical cause of his death remain unknown.

LAPD is nevertheless investigating the circumstances as a homicide.

The department itself notes that the term homicide describes a death caused by another person and does not automatically establish murder or criminal liability. LAPD’s South Bureau Homicide Division also investigates suspicious deaths that may require additional examination before their circumstances are fully established.

No Suspect Description Released

Police have not announced any arrests or identified a suspect.

No description of a possible attacker was immediately available.

Investigators also have not said whether witnesses were located, whether surveillance video exists in the area or whether any weapon or other physical evidence was recovered from the alley.

It is also unclear how long the victim may have been at the location before authorities were called.

Information reviewed by Street People shows that investigators have not publicly established whether the man was attacked in the alley itself or whether events leading to his death occurred somewhere else.

Those questions remain part of the early investigation.

Gang Connection Not Established

Authorities have also not said whether the death was connected to gang activity.

At this stage, there is no confirmed gang-related motive and no public information establishing why the victim may have been targeted.

That distinction is important because the case remains in its earliest investigative phase.

Police have not disclosed whether the victim was known to people living or working nearby or whether detectives have identified any dispute or confrontation that preceded his death.

South Bureau Homicide Handles Exposition Park Cases

The Exposition Park neighborhood falls within LAPD’s Operations-South Bureau, which includes the Southwest, Harbor, 77th Street and Southeast patrol areas. LAPD says South Bureau encompasses neighborhoods surrounding landmarks including USC, the Coliseum and Exposition Park.

The department’s South Bureau Homicide Division is responsible for homicide investigations throughout that portion of Los Angeles.

According to LAPD, the division investigates more than 40% of the homicides occurring citywide and also handles certain suspicious deaths where the circumstances initially remain unclear.

The unit has handled previous homicide investigations in and around Exposition Park, including cases where police initially had little or no suspect information and appealed to the public for assistance.

Those earlier investigations are unrelated to Tuesday night’s death but illustrate the role of the division in this part of Los Angeles.

Homelessness Adds Another Layer to the Investigation

The victim’s housing status also places the death within a broader public-safety concern involving people living without shelter.

Los Angeles continues to operate large-scale programs intended to move unhoused residents indoors. In August, Mayor Karen Bass’ office said the city’s Inside Safe program had carried out more than 130 operations and brought more than 6,000 people indoors since the program began.

That broader homelessness context does not explain what happened to the man found on Leighton Avenue, and authorities have not linked his death to an encampment or any specific homelessness-related dispute.

It does, however, underscore the vulnerability of people living without stable shelter, particularly when serious crimes occur in locations where witnesses or reliable surveillance may be limited.

Investigation Still in Early Stages

Several key questions remain unanswered.

Police have not publicly identified the victim, announced a confirmed cause of death, described any suspect or established a motive.

The reported blunt-force trauma remains preliminary until investigators and the Medical Examiner provide additional information.

Authorities also have not said whether detectives believe the man was killed shortly before officers arrived or whether his body may have been in the alley for a longer period.

Anyone with information about a homicide or suspicious death in South Los Angeles can contact the LAPD South Bureau Homicide Division at 323-786-5100. LAPD also lists 323-786-5153 as a homicide division contact number.

During non-business hours, information can be provided through 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (1-877-527-3247), while anonymous tips may be submitted through L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).

The investigation remains ongoing.
