LOS ANGELES, CA – California prison officials are investigating a 43-year-old incarcerated man for attempted murder after authorities said he attacked a healthcare employee from behind with an improvised weapon at Salinas Valley State Prison.

The incident happened at approximately 12:43 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Prison staff said they witnessed Sean W. Cunningham, 43, strike the healthcare worker from behind before running from the area.

Other employees immediately went to the injured worker’s aid, began life-saving measures and called 911. The employee was subsequently transported to an outside medical facility for treatment.

CDCR has not publicly disclosed the employee’s identity, the extent of the injuries or the person’s current medical condition.

Improvised weapon recovered at scene

Investigators recovered an improvised weapon from the location of the attack and seized it as evidence, according to CDCR.

Officials have not described the weapon or explained how Cunningham allegedly obtained or manufactured it.

Cunningham was located after the attack and placed into restraints without further incident. He has since been moved to restricted housing while the investigation continues.

The allegations against Cunningham have not been proven in court.

The prison’s Investigative Services Unit and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the case for possible criminal prosecution. The California Office of the Inspector General was also notified.

No new criminal charge had been publicly announced by prosecutors as of the latest official information.

Cunningham is serving nearly 50-year sentence

Cunningham was most recently received into state prison from Los Angeles County on April 8, 2009.

He is serving a sentence of 49 years and four months for second-degree robbery as a second-strike offense, with enhancements involving use of a firearm, infliction of great bodily injury and a prior serious felony conviction.

CDCR also disclosed an additional conviction not included in the initial account of Friday’s attack.

In November 2016, Cunningham was sentenced in Kern County to another two years and eight months for resisting or deterring an officer with threat or violence, an offense committed while he was already incarcerated.

Officials have not said what, if any, interaction occurred between Cunningham and the healthcare employee before Friday’s alleged attack.

A motive has not been released.

Prison employee support services activated

CDCR said peer support and other assistance are being offered to employees following the incident.

The attack occurred inside a prison that provides substantial healthcare and mental-health services in addition to conventional custody operations.

According to the state’s official Salinas Valley State Prison profile, the institution operates a Correctional Treatment Center and provides both outpatient and inpatient mental-health services for incarcerated patients.

The facility houses people classified at multiple custody levels, including Level I, III and IV populations.

That context is relevant because healthcare staff routinely work inside secure correctional settings while providing treatment to people held at varying security classifications.

CDCR has not said what type of healthcare work the injured employee performed or where within the prison the attack occurred.

Salinas Valley State Prison houses about 2,300 people

Salinas Valley State Prison opened in May 1996 in Monterey County.

CDCR currently says the institution houses approximately 2,300 incarcerated people in minimum- and maximum-custody settings and employs about 1,500 staff members.

A recent state infrastructure report lists the prison’s design capacity at 2,452 incarcerated people and describes the institution as a Level I, III and IV facility offering academic, career-technical, rehabilitation and reentry programs.

Friday’s attack is also not the first serious assault investigated at the prison in recent years.

In March 2025, CDCR investigated a separate alleged attempted homicide involving an incarcerated person accused of pulling an improvised weapon and attempting to attack a correctional officer at the same institution. That case was likewise referred to prison investigators and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.

The earlier incident is unrelated to Cunningham’s case.

Investigation remains active

Authorities have not released surveillance footage or additional information describing the moments immediately before or after the healthcare worker was struck.

It also remains unclear whether Cunningham will face new charges related to the alleged attack or whether his custody classification will change beyond his current placement in restricted housing.

The recovered weapon and witness accounts from staff are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.

For now, CDCR is treating the incident as an attempted murder of a prison employee, while the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office participates in the review for possible prosecution.

The employee remains unidentified, and no updated medical condition has been publicly released.
