LOS ANGELES, CA – A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after another juvenile was stabbed in the arm during a fight among several teens near the Burbank Town Center, according to the Burbank Police Department.
Officers were sent around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, to the area of Magnolia Boulevard and San Fernando Boulevard, near the shopping center, after a report of a fight involving several juveniles.
The people involved had left before officers arrived, police said. Officers then located a male juvenile with a stab wound to his arm.
Lt. Brent Fekety of the Burbank Police Department announced the arrest Friday, Oct. 16. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect or the victim because both are under 18.
Victim taken to hospital in stable condition
The injured boy was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Police said the injury was not believed to be life-threatening.
The stab wound was to the victim’s arm, according to the department. Police did not release the boy’s age.
Suspect identified and arrested about six hours later
Investigators identified a 17-year-old Burbank resident as the suspect. Police said he was arrested around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, about six hours after the stabbing.
He was booked on suspicion of attempted murder under Penal Code 664/187, according to the department. The motive for the fight has not been made public.
An arrest is not a conviction, and the allegations remain subject to the juvenile court process.
Case submitted to the district attorney
Fekety said the case was submitted to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of formal charges. The office is led by District Attorney Nathan Hochman.
The district attorney’s office publishes a guide to the juvenile justice system that explains how cases involving minors move forward. According to the guide, the office’s Juvenile Division prosecutes crimes committed by minors across the county.
When a minor is accused of a crime, the case is presented to a Juvenile Division office for filing consideration. A minor is told what charges have been filed in a document called a petition.
Police say no ongoing threat to students or community
Police said the stabbing did not occur on school grounds. The department also said there is no ongoing threat to students or the community.
The department described the fight as an altercation involving several teens. It did not say how many young people were involved or whether any others were detained.
Anyone with information asked to call detectives
The Burbank Police Investigation Division is asking anyone with information about the stabbing to call 818-238-3210.
Charging decision remains pending
The 17-year-old was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, and the district attorney’s office is weighing whether to file formal charges. No charging decision had been announced as of Friday, and the investigation remains active.
