LOS ANGELES, CA – A suspect believed to be wanted in connection with a carjacking was taken into custody Tuesday after leading authorities on a pursuit across parts of Los Angeles and Glendale before crashing into an uninvolved driver near Highland Park.

The pursuit unfolded Aug. 25 and traveled through portions of Glendale and Glassell Park before ending outside a gas station near Highland Park.

Authorities said the suspect was believed to be wanted in connection with a carjacking, though officials had not publicly clarified whether the vehicle used during the pursuit was itself the stolen vehicle or whether the suspect was tied to a separate carjacking investigation.

The chase eventually ended when the suspect collided with a vehicle driven by a woman who had no connection to the pursuit.

She was able to get out of her vehicle safely after the crash.

The suspect was detained by law enforcement within seconds of the collision.

No serious injury to the uninvolved driver was reported in the initial information released about the incident.

Authorities had not publicly identified the suspect or disclosed whether additional charges beyond the suspected carjacking and conduct during the pursuit were being considered.

The exact agency that initiated the pursuit and the point at which other law enforcement departments became involved were also not immediately clear from the preliminary information.

Because the chase crossed through Glendale before returning into Los Angeles neighborhoods, multiple jurisdictions may have been involved in monitoring or assisting with the pursuit.

The Los Angeles Police Department maintains specialized investigative resources for carjacking cases and advises motorists that the offense often involves an offender taking a vehicle through force, fear or intimidation.

LAPD’s carjacking safety guidance warns drivers to remain alert when entering, exiting or stopping in their vehicles and to prioritize personal safety rather than resisting if confronted by an armed or threatening suspect.

The department also advises drivers who feel unsafe after a suspicious minor collision to remain cautious before getting out of their vehicle and, when possible, move toward a police station or busy, well-lit location.

Those recommendations are general safety guidance and do not establish how the alleged carjacking connected with Tuesday’s pursuit occurred.

Investigators had not released details about the original carjacking report, including where it happened, whether a weapon was involved or whether anyone was injured during that incident.

The pursuit itself moved through a densely traveled section of northeast Los Angeles.

Glassell Park sits between Glendale and neighborhoods including Highland Park and Eagle Rock, making surface streets through the area common routes between the two cities.

Police pursuits in such environments can become especially dangerous because suspects may encounter traffic signals, pedestrians, parked vehicles and motorists who have little warning that a high-speed chase is approaching.

That risk became evident when the fleeing driver struck the uninvolved woman’s vehicle near the end of the pursuit.

Authorities have not said how fast the suspect was traveling at the moment of impact.

They also have not released information about whether the woman’s vehicle was moving, stopped or entering or leaving the gas station area when it was struck.

Video from the scene showed the pursuit ending abruptly after the collision, with officers quickly moving in to take the driver into custody.

There was no prolonged standoff after the crash.

The uninvolved motorist was able to exit her vehicle without assistance and appeared to avoid serious physical injury.

The extent of damage to her vehicle and the suspect vehicle had not been publicly quantified.

Investigators will likely examine the crash itself separately from the alleged carjacking that prompted the pursuit.

That can include reviewing roadway evidence, nearby surveillance footage, vehicle damage and statements from the uninvolved driver and witnesses.

Gas stations and commercial intersections often have multiple surveillance cameras, but authorities had not confirmed whether any such footage was collected.

Officials also had not said whether the pursuit involved a police helicopter, spike strips or other tactics intended to stop the suspect before the crash.

No officer-involved shooting was reported.

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene without a further chase on foot.

The LAPD had not posted a dedicated public newsroom release about the Aug. 25 pursuit among its most recent published items as of the latest review, so several details remain based on the initial law enforcement information available from the incident. The department’s public newsroom was updated through Aug. 28 with other cases, but no separate release matching this pursuit was listed among the most recent entries.

That means important elements of the case remain unresolved publicly.

Authorities had not released the suspect’s name, age or hometown.

They had not said whether the individual was booked for carjacking, evading police, hit-and-run, reckless driving or another offense.

It was also unclear whether the suspect remained jailed after the arrest or what bail amount, if any, had been set.

The underlying carjacking allegation also remained only partially described.

Officials had not said whether the suspect allegedly took a vehicle directly from a driver, stole a parked vehicle after threatening someone nearby or was wanted on a warrant connected to an earlier case.

LAPD defines carjacking as a particularly dangerous form of vehicle theft because it involves taking a vehicle from another person through force or fear.

The department’s public guidance emphasizes that victims should not risk their lives attempting to protect a vehicle if confronted by an armed offender.

Tuesday’s pursuit ultimately ended with one of the most common dangers associated with police chases: a collision involving someone who had nothing to do with the crime or the pursuit.

The woman struck near Highland Park appears to have escaped serious injury, but the crash illustrates how quickly an unrelated driver can become involved when a fleeing vehicle moves through ordinary city traffic.

Authorities had not announced any additional victims.

Police also had not said whether the suspect or any passenger required medical treatment after the crash.

No information was released indicating that another person was inside the fleeing vehicle.

Investigators are expected to review the suspect’s route through Glendale, Glassell Park and Highland Park, including the circumstances that led officers to begin or continue the pursuit.

Police departments generally document pursuits closely because they involve balancing the need to apprehend a potentially dangerous suspect against the risk posed to surrounding traffic.

No official finding had been released regarding the pursuit tactics used in this case.

The investigation into the alleged carjacking and the crash remains ongoing.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody and that the uninvolved woman was able to safely exit her vehicle after being struck near the end of the chase.
