LOS ANGELES, CA – A 30-year-old Sherman Oaks man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stabbing outside a grocery store on Ventura Boulevard, with authorities saying investigators identified his vehicle and located him the following day.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded at approximately 10:55 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, to the 14800 block of Ventura Boulevard after receiving a radio call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon.
When officers arrived, they located a man who told police he had been stabbed.
Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s name, age or medical condition.
The circumstances leading to the attack also remain unclear.
Police have not said whether the victim and suspect knew one another, whether an argument preceded the stabbing or what investigators believe motivated the assault.
Detectives identify suspect vehicle
After the initial response, LAPD detectives began investigating and were able to identify a vehicle associated with the suspected attacker.
Police identified the suspect as Jonathan Rangal, 30, of Sherman Oaks.
The following day, Rangal was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol, according to information released by LAPD.
Authorities have not disclosed where CHP officers located him or what circumstances led to the arrest.
Rangal was later booked at the Van Nuys Jail on suspicion of attempted murder.
His bail was set at $1.1 million.
The arrest and booking constitute allegations. Rangal is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
What happened before stabbing remains unknown
One of the largest gaps in the case is what occurred immediately before the victim was stabbed.
