LOS ANGELES, CA – A man riding an electric scooter was struck by two vehicles whose drivers did not stop and was killed Friday night while crossing Broadway in the Florence area of South Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The first collision happened at about 9:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at Broadway and 85th Street, the LAPD said. The man, who was in his mid-30s, was crossing in the crosswalk when a vehicle traveling north on Broadway hit him.
LAPD South Traffic Division detectives are investigating. Police are looking for a black vehicle, possibly a sedan, with damage to the front.
The department had not released the man’s identity, which was being withheld pending notification of his family.
Rider struck in the crosswalk at 85th Street
According to the LAPD, the man was riding his electric scooter through the crosswalk at Broadway and 85th Street when the northbound vehicle struck him. He became lodged underneath that vehicle.
The vehicle dragged him about 700 feet, police said, before he came free from underneath it. The driver did not stop.
Second vehicle drags him about 200 feet
A second vehicle then struck the man, the LAPD said, and dragged him about 200 feet farther. He came free from beneath that vehicle at around 83rd Street.
The second driver also left without stopping. Police have not said whether the two vehicles were traveling together or whether the drivers knew each other.
Paramedics pronounce man dead at the scene
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Officers closed Broadway in both directions between 85th Place and 83rd Street while detectives worked the scene.
Police seek a black vehicle with front damage
Detectives are looking for a black vehicle, possibly a sedan, with damage to its front end. Police have not released a description of the second vehicle.
The LAPD said in its statement, “Neither driver stopped to render aid and identify themselves as required by law.”
City publishes collision records on its open data portal
The department publishes records of traffic collisions in the City of Los Angeles dating to 2010 in its traffic collision dataset on the city’s open data portal, with one row for each collision, identified by report number and by LAPD geographic area.
The portal lists the dataset as last updated Jan. 2, 2026, and says it will not receive further updates because the department moved its collision reporting to a new records system.
The city also operates a Hit-and-Run Reward Program that offers up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, apprehension and conviction of a hit-and-run driver. The LAPD had not announced a reward in this case.
Detectives ask for information
Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the drivers is asked to call Officer Cha or Detective Elizarraraz of the LAPD South Traffic Division at 323-421-2577.
Tips can also be given anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
No arrests reported in the investigation
As of Saturday, Oct. 10, no arrests had been reported in connection with the deaths. The investigation by South Traffic Division detectives remains active.
Anyone charged in a case like this is presumed innocent, and any allegations would be subject to the criminal court process.
