LOS ANGELES, CA – A 72-year-old woman was struck and killed by a southbound driver while crossing Main Street near Cubbon Street in Santa Ana on Monday morning, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.
The crash was reported at about 6:27 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, near Main and Cubbon streets, police said. Officers received multiple calls about a pedestrian who had been struck.
Police identified the woman as Sarinana Gaytan Rutilia, 72, of Santa Ana. She died at the scene.
The department’s Collision Investigation Unit is continuing the investigation into how the crash happened.
Aid given at the scene
Santa Ana police officers and personnel from the Orange County Fire Authority responded to the intersection after the calls came in. According to police, they tried to save the woman’s life.
Rutilia died at the scene despite those efforts. Officers had found her lying in the roadway with fatal injuries, according to initial reports.
How police say the crash unfolded
Police said the preliminary investigation indicates Rutilia appeared to have been walking westbound across the northbound and southbound lanes of Main Street. A vehicle traveling southbound struck her while she was in the roadway.
The department described those findings as preliminary. The Collision Investigation Unit has not released further details about the vehicle or the conditions at the time of the crash.
Driver stayed and cooperated
The driver remained at the scene after the collision, police said. The driver cooperated with investigators and did not appear to be impaired, according to the department.
The department did not announce an arrest or a citation in its release on the crash.
