LOS ANGELES, CA – A man who was walking in a marked crosswalk in Long Beach died after he was struck by a car Tuesday morning, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
The collision happened at about 5:38 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the intersection of Anaheim Street and Junipero Avenue, police said. A 2010 Toyota Prius hit the man, who was an adult.
Detectives from the department’s Collision Investigation Detail are investigating the crash. The man had not been publicly identified as of Wednesday.
Pedestrian hit in marked crosswalk
According to police, the man was walking southbound on Junipero Avenue and crossing Anaheim Street in a marked crosswalk when he was hit.
The Prius was traveling eastbound on Anaheim Street in the far left lane, police said. The car struck the man as he crossed.
The intersection is in the Zaferia area of central Long Beach, near Cambodia Town. Anaheim Street is the east-west roadway the man was crossing, and Junipero Avenue runs north and south.
Man dies at hospital
Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and gave the man emergency medical care. Firefighters then took him to a hospital, where he died.
Police described him as a male adult pedestrian and did not release his age.
Driver stayed at the scene
The driver of the Prius, a man in his 70s, stayed at the scene after the collision, according to police spokesperson Andrea Moran. Moran said the driver cooperated with investigators.
Speed and impairment not believed to be factors
Moran said detectives do not believe speed, distracted driving or impaired driving contributed to the crash.
Police had not announced a cause for the collision as of Wednesday.
Victim’s identity pending notification
The man’s name was being withheld pending notification of his family by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
