LOS ANGELES, CA – The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has announced that all schools and district offices will remain closed on Friday as multiple wildfires continue to wreak havoc across the region. The decision comes as strong winds, pervasive smoke, and active fires create unsafe conditions for school communities.
“The convergence of these factors—wind, fire, and smoke—has resulted in unpredictable and hazardous situations,” the district stated in a public announcement. “The health and safety of our students, staff, and families remain our top priorities as Los Angeles responds to this unprecedented crisis.”
Free Meal Services for Students
Despite closures, LAUSD has arranged for free meal distribution for students at designated sites across the city to ensure access to food during this emergency:
- North Region: Mulholland Middle School, Sepulveda Middle School, San Fernando Middle School, Richard E. Byrd Middle School
- East Region: Hollenbeck Middle School, South Gate High School, Los Angeles Academy Middle School, John H. Liechty Middle School
- South Region: Fremont High School, Harry Bridges Span School, Edwin Markham Middle School, Barack Obama Global Preparation Academy
- West Region: Marina Del Rey Middle School, Sonia Sotomayor Arts and Sciences Magnet, Berendo Middle School, Fairfax High School
These locations will be open for students to collect meals as the community navigates the crisis.
Support Services
Mental health resources have also been made available to families affected by the closures and the ongoing wildfires. Students and staff in need of support are encouraged to contact the district’s mental health services hotline at 213-241-3840.
Monitoring the Situation
District officials emphasized that essential personnel may be contacted by supervisors for potential work assignments. The district continues to closely monitor developments and coordinate with emergency management agencies to evaluate conditions for reopening.
For the latest updates on school closures, available resources, and meal service locations, the district is urging families to visit the LAUSD website at lausd.org.
As fires continue to threaten communities across Los Angeles, district officials expressed their gratitude for the resilience of students, families, and staff and the tireless efforts of first responders working to contain the blazes.
