LOS ANGELES, CA – A brazen attempt to steal copper wire in Huntington Park was thwarted by vigilant neighbors who confronted the suspects, preventing the theft but causing a temporary disruption to local AT&T services. The incident, which occurred Sunday at the intersection of Marbrisa and Saturn Avenues, was captured on video and has drawn attention to the ongoing issue of copper wire theft in the area.
The video shows one suspect climbing telephone poles with bolt cutters, attempting to sever and collect the wires, while an accomplice waited below. The theft attempt was so conspicuous that it prompted several neighbors to intervene. In the footage, one resident can be heard telling the suspects in Spanish to “get a job,” reflecting the community’s frustration with such crimes.
One of the good Samaritans, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed his outrage over the incident. “I saw what they were doing, and it wasn’t right. I felt inside that I had to do something about it, to protect my family and the community,” he said. The resident, who works hard to support himself, criticized the suspects for not seeking legitimate employment. “You can pick up cans or plastic. People can do better,” he added.
Thanks to the neighbors’ intervention, no wires were stolen. However, the suspects’ actions knocked out AT&T services in the area, requiring repair crews to restore connectivity. Utility workers noted that criminals often target copper wires due to their high resale value, despite the significant disruptions caused by such thefts.
Local residents expressed gratitude for the quick actions of the good Samaritans, who helped prevent further damage and theft. The incident highlights the challenges communities face in combating copper wire theft, a crime that not only disrupts essential services but also endangers public safety.
Authorities are investigating the incident and urge anyone with information to come forward.
