LOS ANGELES, CA – A 9-year-old boy was fatally shot outside his grandfather’s home in Compton over the holiday weekend, leaving his family devastated. Authorities have arrested the child’s father, identifying him as the prime suspect in the tragic killing.
The shooting occurred just after 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the 1500 block of South Haskins Avenue, near Alondra Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The young victim was identified by family members as Princeton Nicholas Jones.
Family members and friends described Princeton as a joyful and loving child who brought light into the lives of everyone around him.
“He’s innocent. He doesn’t deserve this. He wasn’t a bad kid, and I’m going to miss my boy so much,” said his aunt, Shenika Akins. “If anyone knows who did this, please say something. My nephew didn’t deserve this.”
On Monday morning, detectives named Princeton’s biological father, 32-year-old Nicholas Jones, as the suspect. Jones was arrested on Sunday on charges of murder and child abuse resulting in death, according to the sheriff’s department. He is being held at the East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, leaving the family grappling with unanswered questions.
“He was at his grandparents’ house for the holiday weekend when his dad shot him in the yard,” said Shamica Frasier, Princeton’s aunt. “I don’t know why. He was a loving, warm kid, very respectful, just heartwarming.”
The tragedy has shaken the community and left family members searching for solace. A GoFundMe page has been created to support the family and honor Princeton’s memory.
“Tragedy struck when Princeton was fatally shot in front of his grandfather’s home,” the fundraiser states. “This senseless act has left our family devastated.”
Loved ones described Princeton as “a beacon of joy, lighting up every room he entered with his humor and infectious smile. He was adored by his friends, family, and community, who all cherished the incredible person he was becoming.”
Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Princeton’s death is an unimaginable loss, and we are committed to seeking justice for him and his family,” an LASD spokesperson said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Anonymous tips can be submitted through L.A. Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.lacrimestoppers.org.
