LOS ANGELES, CA – A 14-year-old boy riding a small motorbike died Sunday afternoon after crashing into a parked vehicle on a residential street in Inglewood, according to the Inglewood Police Department.
Officers responded to the 1120 block of East 65th Street at about 4:09 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4. They found the boy lying on the roadway with fatal injuries.
Despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The department has not released the boy’s name. He is a minor, and Street People is not identifying him.
Preliminary investigation describes the crash
A preliminary investigation indicated that the boy was riding a small motorbike at a high rate of speed before he crashed into a parked vehicle, police said.
The crash happened in a residential neighborhood on East 65th Street, according to the department, and the boy was found on the roadway.
Police described those details as preliminary. They are the sequence investigators have indicated so far, and they do not amount to a finding about why the crash occurred.
Cause of the collision under investigation
Authorities said the cause of the crash has not been established. “At this time, the cause of the traffic collision has not been determined and remains under investigation,” the department said.
Police did not describe the make or type of the motorbike in the information released.
Traffic Unit contact for the case
Police named Investigator R. Humphrey as the contact for the case. The Inglewood Police Traffic Unit page lists Police Investigator R. Humphrey, at the same number police gave for this case, among the unit’s contacts.
According to that page, the Traffic Unit is located within the department’s Office of Special Enforcement. It says one of the unit’s goals is “to reduce the number of traffic collisions and fatalities through enforcement activities.”
The page says the unit investigates more than 5,000 traffic collisions each year. It lists speed among the lead causes of traffic collisions, though police have not said what caused this crash.
Statewide motorcyclist deaths
The California Office of Traffic Safety publishes statewide figures on motorcycle crashes. Its motorcycle safety page states that “In 2023, 583 motorcyclists were killed in crashes on California roads, a 10.2% decrease from the 649 motorcyclists killed in crashes in 2022, but a nearly 19% increase from 491 motorcyclists killed in 2019.”
Those figures cover motorcyclists across California and are not specific to Inglewood or to young riders.
Police ask for information
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Investigator R. Humphrey at 310-412-5134. People who prefer to remain anonymous can call the department’s 24-hour anonymous hotline at 1-888-412-7463.
Investigation remains active
The Inglewood Police Department’s investigation into the Oct. 4 crash on East 65th Street is continuing, and the cause of the collision has not been determined.
